098 TECHNOLOGY / CASE STUDY REALISING POTENTIAL
John Lewis recently opened its first store to be lit entirely with LEDs, GE Lighting provided the fittings for the Ipswich project, which has significantly enhanced the retail experience for customers and staff.
The decision for UK retailer John Lewis to move to energy efficient LED technology was motivated by the company’s goal to reduce energy consumption in its stores by 20 percent in ten years. Selecting a high performing and aesthetically pleasing lighting solution for the Ipswich store in the UK, while respecting the organisation’s culture of corporate and social responsibility meant research was key to this project. As such, John Lewis partnered with GE Lighting for the initial trial of LED technology and opted to use GE’s Infusion modules. When it came to installing the LEDs, John Lewis had very specific criteria for the lighting scheme. This included a colour temperature requirement of 3000K warm white combined with precise light control
via a 15-degree narrow beam optical system. Furthermore, since LED technology continues to evolve, the new lighting scheme had to be easy to upgrade. To meet these requirements the company opted for luminaires supplied and adapted by Edge Lighting, incorporating GE Lighting’s Infusion LED modules. The LEDs were installed throughout the store including the shop floor, office spaces and warehouses.
The chosen modules deliver a high quality of light and are available in 800 to 4500 lumen versions, three different colour temperatures and 80+ and 90+ CRI (R1- R14), matching all retail application needs. In addition the twist-in GE Infusion LED module enables the entire LED engine to be removed and upgraded, ensuring the new
lighting is completely future-proof. The lighting average benchmark across the John Lewis business is 30W/m2, based on ceramic metal halide lights. The equivalent figure for the all LED Ipswich store is just 10W/m2. This has resulted in a 67 percent reduction in electricity demand for lighting. The implementation of LED has been such a success that the John Lewis team are already planning to utilise the new GE Infusion Modules coming to the market in early summer 2013 in order to further improve upon the existing energy savings. The LEDs deliver a bright, clear, white light that aids visual comfort and ensures colours are true to life.
