DISTRIBUTED WIND
HONORARY DEGREES FOR INDUSTRY LEADERS
Champagne corks were popping as staff from a market-leading wind turbine company celebrated their first installation in the north of England, marking their 500th turbine in the ground to date.
BRANCHING OUT
The milestone comes as the business, based in Norfolk, branches into both the north and south west of the country, opening new offices in Yorkshire and Cornwall, due to increasing demand for its 15m high, 5kW systems.
Managing director and founder of the business, John Moore, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating this milestone for Windcrop and the small wind industry.
SAVINGS
“From our Norfolk start-up with two systems in 2009, our current fleet of 500 will generate around 80GWh of electricity during their 20 year life. Each system will save the site owner around £500 a year in electricity and this will rise as electricity prices increase in the future.
“To be honest, for us, it’s about saving as much money as we possibly can” commented Mr Hargreaves. “We have a number of horses, dogs and chickens on the farm and electricity bills just keep on rising.
WINDCROP CELEBRATES FIRST NORTHERN INSTALL WITH 500TH TURBINE
“As well as helping people in tough economic times, Windcrop’s existing turbines will save the environment from an estimated 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide by 2033 by replacing fossil fuel resources and due to our unique installation method we have already saved more than 1,500 tons of CO2 by using helical piles instead of concrete.”
HAPPY CUSTOMERS
Smallholder Anthony Hargreaves, 75, and his wife Pat, 73, were the happy customers to have the landmark turbine erected at their 16 acre farm in Silsden, West Yorkshire.
Staff from Windcrop joined the couple for a celebratory glass of champagne recently.
“We already had solar panels, but we were keen to save as much as possible, so it works really well to have both systems running side by side.”
Based on Windrop’s current fleet performance, the Hargreaves’ are expected to save £342 a year on their electricity bills with their new turbine, which amounts to a £11,318 saving over the next 20 years.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS As well as making considerable savings on their bills, the family will also be doing their bit for the environment by reducing their carbon footprint and saving an estimated 90 tons of carbon dioxide by 2033.
Mr Hargreaves added: “I am really pleased with the turbine. The guys who installed it were great, only taking a day, and it’s so quiet the animals don’t even notice it.”
