“Be someone who makes a difference” – a direct quote from Fiona Marshall, winner of last year’s WISE award for enterprise and innovation, is a great way to inspire young women and girls to go into engineering.
RESEARCH
Research on young people’s career choices shows that girls want creative and caring jobs.
A campaign selling opportunities to be involved in green energy solutions to help save the planet will capture their attention and imagination more than a campaign to persuade them to study physics, to choose a technical apprenticeship or study engineering at university. The UK needs to get more girls doing physics and taking engineering qualifications, but the numbers have not shifted significantly for a generation, so it is time for a new approach.
STRONG APPEAL
Wind power and renewables in general should have a strong appeal to girls because they offer a solution to climate change - a global problem. As a growth industry, the job prospects and opportunity to be at the forefront of new technologies are also very positive selling points.
As an organisation WISE would love to work with the inspiring women featured in this magazine and others like them to change the image of engineering so that it becomes a more aspirational career
choice for girls, and for their parents and teachers, whose influence can be critical.
GROWING DATABASE
We has a growing database of young female role models working in science, technology and engineering, who are passionate about what they do and want to inspire more girls to follow in their footsteps. We have developed a flexible suite of activities and structured discussion sessions to get girls of all ages inspired by science, technology and engineering.
These sessions are designed to support role models, STEM ambassadors and others delivering STEM outreach and engagement. We are also working on resources which teachers can use in the classroom to open up discussion about girls and science, supported by a one day training programme. We would love to
hear from industry partners who would like to collaborate with WISE to roll out these resources across the UK.
OUR VISION
With your support, we can increase the pipeline of female talent coming into your company and into science, technology and engineering sectors as a whole. Our vision is to increase the proportion of women doing STEM roles in the UK to 30% by 2020. An ambitious target, given the current percentage is just 13%. We can’t do it alone – only by harnessing the energy and passion of all those who believe that female talent could give a significant boost to UK industry will we shift the dial in the right direction. WISE membership gives you access to a growing network of like-minded people in education, industry and the not for profit sector to share ideas, good practice and develop projects together.

NOMINATIONS FOR A WISE AWARD Nominations for the WISE Awards 2013 are now open. The awards, which celebrate female talent for women and girls at all stages of their career in science, technology and engineering, will be presented at a high profile evening event on Thursday 14 November 2013 at the Science Museum in London.
