DEVELOPMENTS IN FOUNDATION TECHNOLOGY

MTL’S JOURNEY INTO

INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE

OFFSHORE WIND

In 2009 whilst still located on Darnell Road, MTL Group Limited won a significant order to supply Burnt Island Fabrication with 48 boatlanding systems. Now a leading supplier to the oatlanding and offshore fabrication sector this was the beginning of the group’s journey into renewables.

GROWTH

As MTL Group has grown so have their clientele, MTL Group has supplied some of the biggest names in the industry such as Aker solutions, Weserwind, Ambau and Tag with boatlanding systems.

INVESTMENT

The group believe the key to this growth is down to the large investment in the latest state of the art machinery, in people and facilities.

ROBOTIC TUBE CUTTING In 2009 the group recognised the growing demand for tubular structures such as Jackets and Substation Platforms. To meet this demand they utilised their own employees’ skills and experience to develop a Robotic Tube Cutter.

Capable of cutting steel tube up to 8 metres in length by 1 metre in diameter and adaptable to larger sizes. This machine saves the need to use expensive inaccurate methods for “cod mouth cuts” and applying weld preps.

Using the machines bevel capability an extensive range of cuts can be applied in seconds eliminating the need for hand grinding and using templates.

With the fabrication work force doubling over just a few short years so did the investment in this area, The group made the decision to go ahead and invest in their fabricators and welders accrediting them with ISO 9001:2008, ISO 3834 Part 2, Norsok M101, EEMUA 158, DIN18800-7 and FPAL making the MTL Group ‘ready for round three’.

GOING DOCKSIDE

As the demand grew, so did the facilities and in early 2010 the group invested in a quayside facility at the Port of Blyth extending their lifting capabilities to over 300 tonne. All work such as fabricating, welding, shot blasting and painting can also be completed on-site alongside non- destructive testing and the capability to load on ship.

HEADQUARTERS

MTL Groups Headquarters previously based at Darnell Road with a fabrication shop nearby on Kettle Bridge Road in Sheffield were moved to a 28’000 hectare site in Rotherham as part of a £5M investment allowing the group to put all of their processes under one roof making them a one stop shop for all fabrications which can be transported by road.

STATE-OF-THE-ART

Using the groups state of the art precision engineering facility in Rotherham to process materials and the Port of Blyth facility to fabricate and weld large structures MTL Group continues to be a sustainable key player in supplying boatlanding systems to the United Kingdom and Europe.
