40TH BIRTHDAY? OH, THE HORROR!

June begins with Richard O’Brien’s famous Rocky Horror show. And the producers have put together an all-star cast for the special anniversary tour, which reaches the Teatre Royal on June 3-8 – just two weeks short of its 40th birthday. Ten ITV’s top comedy of all time, Rising Damp, is returning to the stage. Don Warrington, who played put-upon tenant Philip in the original is heading behind-the-scenes to direct the new production, which takes to the Norwich Teatre Royal stage on June 17-22. Ten expect spectacular dance routines and stunning singing backed by the sound of a powerful rock band, as Bohemian Rhapsody arrives in Norwich with an all-new production from June 24-26. A host of top showbiz stars are joining forces for A Night For Equality and Variety on Sunday June 23, which is being presented by the Peter Tatchell Foundation. Eighties pop legend Marc Almond tops the bill, alongside actress and musician Heather Peace who has most recently portrayed Nikki Boston in the BBC’s Waterloo Road. Compering the proceedings will be ‘I’m A Celeb…’ winner Christopher Biggins who will bring his big-hearted bonhomie to proceedings. On Tursday 27th get ready to do the hand jive, as one of the best-loved musicals of all time is heading back to Norwich. Sing-A-Long-A Grease is the ultimate karaoke night out as you are encouraged to join in with all the tunes from the classic movie. Finally, An Evening of Burlesque arrives in Norwich on Saturday 29 June. Tink feathers, glistening rhinestones and stockings galore, as an all-star- cast of beautiful burlesque dancers dazzle audiences with their lavish costumes and sultry moves.

BEST IN THE N. M. EAST.

At the time of writing, we nervously await the results of the NME’s Britain’s Best Small Venue Award, of which Norwich Arts Centre was already the regional winner. But whether the national prize goes to our deserving NAC, or to one of the other venues who trained indie- monkeys to press vote buttons incessantly (we only realised today that the NME were accepting multiple votes from the same person! Not griping, honest.) the NAC will always be a winner to us as it continues to cater for the breadth of Norwich citizens. Tis month, for those of us with a more dog-eared birth certificate (adults in age, but not in spirit), Matt Corby will be performing on Turs 20th June with + Annie Eve in support. Still only in his early 20s, Matt Corby has previously been compared to legendary artists such as Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, while his live performances have become renowned for bringing large audiences to a complete stand still. Ten, catering to those with youth on their side, there’s something for the kids in the form of Robin Hood & His Very Merry Men, an interpretation of the classic from Uncontained Arts on Sat 22nd June. Te company returns to NAC to reenact outlaw Robin Hood’s pilfering from the rich to save the poor. Featuring live music and puppetry, this is a family show with lots of opportunities to join in. 'Te company clearly know what kids want.' Te Stage ***** For details on these and all the NAC shows, go to www.norwichartscentre.co.uk

PAY-AS-YOU-GO, GO, GO!

Checking the location of the nearest car, sending a confirmation that you need it fast and then swiping a card to get in it, despite not being the owner might seem a little James Bond, but that’s the reality for many Norfolk residents who use the Norfolk Car Club. Te Club is a pay-as- you-go car hire service that has recently increased its fleet to 20 cars from 17. It is also well on its way in Norwich to become the first not-for- profit city-wide car club in the UK, providing residents and businesses access to a car within walking distance from where they live and work. Members will now benefit from smugly driving around one of three new low emission VW Golfs, residing on City Road, Chapelfield East and Geoffrey Watling Way. Te community car club plans to continue the expansion of its car network in Norwich, providing an affordable, quality, sustainable transport option. Car club member Tom Woods, who lives in Norwich, said: “We don't own a car and will not be buying one soon, because of the convenience and flexibility that the car club offers. We must have saved thousands of pounds in purchase costs, insurance, road tax, MOT, petrol and maintenance costs. Also, I love being able to make and change a booking straight from my smartphone – even as I am walking towards the car sometimes!” Te Norfolk Car Club is funded by Norfolk County Council and other partners; for more information or to join the car club, visit www.norfolkcarclub.com.
