(HFO) outside, in line with Marpol requirements. Mr Mareska predicted, however, that “in the future we won’t use HFO anymore because all of North Europe uses low sulphur fuel.” Mareska explained however that
the more efficient fuel is HFO because it “has more power because of more quality inside” while MGO is “the least efficient because the power is less”. Putting some numbers to it he explained that at full speed 240t of HFO is consumed in 24 hours. Using LSF there is an increase of 10 per cent and MGO 20 per cent over HFO. During the christening in Genoa when the ship was in port for about 60 hours, he estimated using 120 tonnes of MGO when deploying one motor only. Stefano Aiello, staff captain at MSC
Cruises, has been involved in all the newbuidings since 2005 and was in the yard from November 2012 working on MSC Preziosa. Having previously been safety officer for three years he has much to bring to the newbuildings from both his roles and has been very much involved in the development of safety systems.
He explained that the integrated navigation system from SAM Electronics includes its Multipilot integrated navigation system, with which everything can be controlled from one position.
When it comes to safety, MSC
Cruises has been developing its evacuation protocol which was introduced on MSC Divina and is being rolled out across the fleet. The system was being trialled prior to the Costa Concordia tragedy, according to Mr Aiello. It includes data readers at the assembly stations to conduct
longest single ride on the waves. Also for the first time on MSC ships is a pair of Eataly restaurants – a popular Turin-based chain founded by Oscar Farinetti on the principles of ‘slow food’ philosophy. The Sports & Bowling Diner has been completely revitalised with a rustic wood and metal décor. It offers a classic American food experience, ten- pin bowling and sports matches played continuously on the bar’s big screens. Although there are no newbuildings on order for MSC, Mr Aiello said that the next generation was already being planned and would be shorter for accessing ports and wider to give more space. He mentioned 5,000 passengers and a gross tonnage of about 160,000gt. STX France is making some

very fast passenger counts and there is a large display on the bridge so that passengers can be monitored at the assembly stations (and lifeboats if necessary). Once a muster drill is completed, the system prepares a letter for any missing passengers inviting them to attend another one. Mr Aiello said it took MSC one year to develop the system which is located in two stations, fore and aft. Presented on MSC Fantasia last
year in response to the Costa Concordia incident was the company’s vessel planning and monitoring system that has been rolled out fleetwide. It uses AIS data to track its ships’ positions so that “when we go a certain distance outside the planned route an alarm advises both the office and the bridge,” he said. It confirms he said that “we are following the same rules we have always followed, there is nothing new.”

As far as the interiors are concerned, the only space that is the same design as in the ship’s original concept is the shopping area, Phoenician Plaza, according to Marco de Jorio, project manager for De Jorio International, an Italian designer that specialises in ship interiors. For the rest, the colours are different and there has been some functional improvement. One feature that is unique to this ship is the Vertigo water slide. MSC Cruises said that, at 120m, it is the
production changes in the yard according to Mr Pean, contract manager STX Europe. Pre-outfitting capacity has been increased with the ability to install piping, cable trays and equipment inside the panels and blocks. He said: “We had to change the way of design, the quality and the methods of production to make it better and better.” Next year the yard will be adding
a 1,300 tonne crane to the existing 750 tonne unit enabling it to build larger blocks. “The bigger the blocks, the more outfitting we can do which will speed up the process,” he said. “It is a big investment.” In addition, investment is being made in design tools and in changing the CAD/CAM system. Commenting on Preziosa, he said that Fantasia class ships have one of the best hull forms, which is confirmed by their “good hydrodynamic performances”. Furthermore, Divina and Preziosa have better energy efficiencies due to the latest improvements, he said. To build MSC Preziosa took 80 blocks, 66,000 light points, 30,000 tonnes of steel, 300km of piping, 1,800km of electrical cables and 3.2 million hours of work. It has 18 decks (14 for passengers) named after precious stones, 1,751 cabins, 30,000m2 of public spaces including a 1,700m2 spa, 26 lifts, three swimming pools and a design of 43 different colours. MSC Preziosa is homeported in
Genoa until November offering a seven-night itinerary around the Western Mediterranean with calls in Naples and Messina, Tunis, Barcelona and Marseille. PST
