Vantage to double river cruise fleet

Shipyard De Hoop has delivered two vessels to tour operator Vantage Deluxe World Travel (Vantage) as part of the US-headquartered company’s US$120 million investment programme that will double its river cruise fleet by 2014. River Splendour and River Venture

are the latest in a series of three vessels ordered by river cruise specialist Vantage and join sister ship River Discovery II, which was also built by the Dutch yard and launched in March

Return of Titanic Australia-headquartered Blue Star Line has struck a contract with a Chinese shipyard to build a cruise ship that replicates the Titanic.

Australian mining billionaire Clive Palmer set up Blue Star Line in 2012 – the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic – and at the start of this year signed an agreement with Chinese-state owned CSC Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing to build a replica. Finland-headquartered marine architects Deltamarin have also been hired to design the new ship, named Titanic II. Speaking to PST about the project, Robert Segercrantz, Deltamarin sales

Regal Princess is launched

Princess Cruises’ latest newbuild Regal Princess has been launched at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard. The new vessel is one of the

largest ships – along with sister Royal Princess – ever built by the Italian shipyard, at 141,000gt, 330m long and 38m wide. It is scheduled for delivery in spring 2014, while Royal Princess, launched last August, will be delivered in the first half of this year. Regal Princess has 1,780 cabins, with 81 per cent (1,438 cabins) having balconies; it will be able to accommodate 3,600 passengers, with a total capacity for over 5,600 people, including crew. Fincantieri said some of the

main considerations behind the ship’s construction included rational use of space, with the aim of avoiding any wasted tonnage that would otherwise increase operating costs and energy saving initiatives, including an efficient hull form created using computational fluid dynamics. The builder highlighted that the ship is being built specifically to suit every type of cruise and geographical location, from

Alaska to Australia, even in environmentally protected areas where navigation is restricted. Once afloat, the cruise vessel will be moved to the outfitting dock where final construction and interior outfitting will take place. Regal Princess will be placed on a Mediterranean itinerary when delivered. Fincantieri has built 13 cruise

2012. All vessels are being deployed on European river itineraries. The 110m-long River Venture and 135m-long River Splendour – the maximum length allowed by European Union regulations – both emphasise energy saving features. Shipyard De Hoop said they included fuel-efficient propulsion systems that led to reduced emissions, energy saving LED lighting throughout the ships and ceilings constructed out of canvas, which is stretched over the framework, thus reducing the ships’ weight and leading

director said that it was “hard to copy an old design into the new”, and that there would have to be some differences between the internal layouts of the two ships. He gave some examples: “There are things in the old design that we can’t fulfil, like dead-end corridors. Modern rules don’t allow for this. Also the crew will have modern cabins (again due to today’s rules), although traditional cabins will be built for passengers.” The dimensions of Titanic II will also

differ from its predecessor, as it will be four metres wider, have three metres less draft and include an extra deck. Mr Segercrantz said the owner had announced that the ship will start sailing

to a reduction in the consumption of fuel.

The new vessels will boost Vantage’s

European services, offering passengers new itineraries along the Elbe, Rhine, Main and Danube rivers, a new river voyage in France and revamped itineraries in Portugal and Russia. Vantage chief operating officer Kevin

Wallace singled out the benefits of the new additions, predicting “significant growth in the number of passengers we host on our European river cruising vessels in 2013 and 2014.”

on late 2016. Steel cutting is pencilled in to take place next year.

Blue Star Line said in documents drawn up about its planned newbuild that it would create an “authentic experience” with the same interior and cabin layout as Titanic but “integrating modern safety procedures, navigation methods and 21st century technology.” It added the fact that Titanic II would be 4m wider than the original with an “improved hull” would “add stability and greater fuel efficiency.” The liner will be deployed on Titanic’s original journey of Southampton to New York, but will also cover other itineraries (as yet unspecified).
