››› The Italian shipyard has called it ‘Project Mille’ – the word for 1,000 in Italian. “1,000 is applicable as 10 x 10 x 10: the new concept gives 10 per cent more outside balcony cabins, 10 per cent more open decks and 10 per cent more efficiency,” commented the shipyard’s merchant ship business unit head of marketing and new concept development Maurizio Cergol. “Having heavy engine rooms located in the middle of the vessel distributes the weight of the ship better and is able to create a hull that is more hydrodynamically balanced. Advantages include the fact that it is easier to trim the ship as the new configuration means that the overall size of the bending moments on the structure is less,” Mr Cergol told PST. The greater number of balcony

Carnival Cruise Lines launches operational programme after Triumph Carnival Cruise Lines has announced a US$300 million programme to enhance operational reliability and guest comfort following a review on the back of the Carnival Triumph fire. The cruise line said upgrades had been started to enhance emergency power capabilities, introduce new fire safety technology and improve the level of operating redundancies across its 24-ship fleet. Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement that an additional emergency generator will be installed on each vessel to provide back-up power for all stateroom and public toilets, fresh water and elevators in the event of a loss of main power. Upon completion of the initial phase, the line will install a second permanent back-up power system on each ship to provide an even greater level of hotel and guest services if main power is lost. These additional services will include expanded cooking facilities and

RCI unveils new Quantum class ships Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has unveiled its new groundbreaking Quantum class of ship that it says will debut in autumn 2014 with Quantum of the Seas, followed by sister ship Anthem of the Seas in spring 2015. The cruise operator said the 167,800gt ships will carry 4,180 guests at double occupancy, feature 2,090 staterooms and introduce more “game-changing, firsts at sea”. New features will include: staterooms that are on average 9 per cent

cabins are thanks to a higher number of passenger cabin decks, the wider surface of open decks and improved structural efficiency due to the balanced distribution of longitudinal weights that the new configuration allows. “By adding more cabins with outside space, the cabin value is increased as they are more appealing. Especially in a big ship, it is possible to start to lose perception of being on a ship, as you see the sea from very far away. The idea with this concept is that you are close to the marine environment and therefore there is more connection between passenger and environment,” Mr Cergol said. He said that lifeboat operation would also be more efficient (lowering simply by gravity from a winch) as well as safer, with direct passenger embarkation from their stowed position.

cold food storage, as well as internet and telephone communications. Other enhancements include additional investments in fire prevention, detection and suppression systems, including the upgrading of the existing water mist fire suppression systems already in place on Carnival vessels to the newest generation. A statement explained that, when triggered, the high-pressure water mist system instantly created a larger and thicker blanket of water droplets than the present system. “As the water droplets evaporate, the system also rapidly cools any hot areas to prevent the possibility of a fire restarting,” it added. At time of writing, parent company Carnival Corporation was carrying out an operational review of all its 10 cruise brands following the Carnival Triumph incident. It said that, based on the results of the ongoing review, the latest versions of technologies and enhancements would also be implemented on the remainder of the fleet where they are not already present, taking place over the next few months.

larger than those of its Oasis-class ships. A statement said that interior staterooms would have ‘virtual balconies’ offering real-time views. Other features will include a space

called Two70 Degree, which will be a multi-level room with views through floor-to-ceiling glass walls spanning almost three decks at the stern of the ship, and North Star, a jewel shaped glass capsule taking guests more than 300ft above the ocean for 360 degree views. Quantum of the Seas will sail out of New York Harbour on 7-12 night itineraries. PST
