UK minister opens SAICA’s new recycled paper mill
D
escribed as Europe’s most advanced recycled paper making line, SAICA’s PM11 in
the UK was offi cially opened in April by Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, Minister of State for Business & Energy.
The £300 million facility at
Parti ngton Wharfside, Traff ord, is the Spanish-based paper and corrugated packaging manufacturer’s fi rst recycled paper mill in the UK and the fi rst new containerboard paper mill to be built in the UK for many years. It will produce up to 450,000tpa of 100 per cent recycled containerboard each year from UK recovered papers. It is the fi nal part of SAICA’s £500 million investment plan to become an integrated player in the UK’s packaging sector, providing a closed-loop system for
the manufacture of performance papers and corrugated packaging. PM11 fi rst produced paper in mid-January – two weeks ahead of the project start date and setti ng a new world start up speed record of 1,105 metres per minute at 95 gr/m2
. The line is now operati ng at full
capacity, running at 1,500 metres per minute making performance papers in the 75-135gsm range. The mill will use around 450,000 tonnes a year of recycled paper in the UK. Speaking ahead of PM11’s inaugurati on, SAICA President Ramón Alejandro said: “We are thrilled that our world-leading facility is now running at full capacity and are proud to offi cially open PM11, which has already set new records. “Our customers deserve the best and we have been determined to deliver a facility that produces high quality performance papers.”
Swedish research company Innventi a has launched a project cluster into the product properti es of ti ssue, having previously concentrated on energy issues. The project is part of Innventi a’s
Cluster Research Programme, and follows the previous ti ssue cluster which ended last winter. Pulp manufacturers, their suppliers and ti ssue manufacturers will all be involved in the project. “One key aspect of the Cluster
Research Programme is that the content is adapted according to the parti cipati ng companies, so that the results really do meet future needs in terms of problem- solving and development,” explains Innventi a’s Matti as Drotz. Hannes Vomhoff is the scienti fi c advisor of the ti ssue research cluster. “In the previous ti ssue cluster, we focused on energy effi ciency, which is an important aspect of all papermaking, but we will now be focusing on diff erent aspects of product functi onality. For example, this will involve investi gati ng the mechanical properti es of low grammage products and ways in which the

fi bres can be modifi ed to make them stronger,” said Vomhoff . “The fi bre properti es also
aff ect the conditi ons for the manufacturing process. For example, problems with dusti ng can arise in the paper machine during manufacturing, as well as during conversion and post- treatment, or when used by the end-consumer. It is also important for manufacturers to opti mise the use of the raw material for cost reasons.” More informati on from Matti as
