Surface quality for print is easier to measure

roughness of paperboard and linerboard has been launched by Lorentzen & Wett re. The L&W Stylus Roughness

A

Tester Emveco measures micro- deviati on, a characteristi c that correlates to how well a paper or board will print. The product is a replacement

for the Emveco Stylus Roughness Profi ler System 210-R, which has been used in the industry for

n improved paper laboratory instrument that measures the micro-surface

many years. All measurement and analysis is

carried out inside the instrument, and no extra soft ware or computer is needed. The testi ng procedure is fully automated: aft er a photocell detects the presence of a sample, the reference head is automati cally lowered against the sample to rest against the paper. The head moves at a constant speed relati ve to the sample and the stylus follows the contours of the surface. Aft er a defi ned measuring distance the head is lift ed and moved back to the start

positi on. The sample is then fed to the next measuring positi on by the sample feeder. Each measurement takes less than 10 seconds. “Finally, there is a replacement of the popular Emveco 210R. Stylus measurement has proven to be an excellent predictor of how well a fl exo printed surface will print with minimum ink consumpti on while retaining print uniformity,” says Thomas Fürst, product manager at Lorentzen & Wett re, which is part of the ABB group. commissioned without having to invest in handheld devices or needing to perform provisioning locally at the device. The result is faster and less-costly deployment and improved worker safety. The GCI feature allows

Easier deployment of wireless technology

Wireless technology is said to be easier to deploy and operate in large capital projects and monitoring applicati ons with the launch of Honeywell’s OneWireless Network Release 210. New features in Release 210 include over-the-air fi eld device provisioning and a Gateway General Client Interface (GCI)

made possible by the ISA100 standard; and nati ve integrati on of OneWireless fi eld networks into Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS). “Wireless technology is

transforming the industrial landscape and we are trying to make it even easier for end users to deploy and use,” said Ray Rogowski, global marketi ng

director, Wireless, Honeywell Process Soluti ons. “With OneWireless Release 210, users can benefi t from the fl exibility and scalability off ered by the ISA100 standard while maintaining high performance and reliability.” With the over-the-air

provisioning feature, fi eld devices can now be confi gured and

operations to continue using legacy protocols and proprietary applications while making it easier to wirelessly expand those applications throughout the plant. It also allows third party client applications to communicate natively using proprietary or common field protocols with wireless field instruments over the ISA100 network. Enabling operations to continue using existing applications or protocols eliminates the need to reinvest in additional equipment and new client applications, re-train maintenance and operations personnel, and to provide consistency across the plant.
