Drainage control for energy savings

A new drainage control sensing system has been installed at a mill in Italy to provide quality improvements and reduced energy consumpti on. PPL reports
I
talian paper maker Favini’s Rossano Veneto mill is one of the fi rst to exploit the benefi ts of a new type
of sensor that measures the amount of water at any desired positi on in the forming secti on, with a control loop on the main refi ner developed by ABB. The measurement results make it possible to gain control of drainage and ply bonding. The Forming Sensor Drainage
(FSD) sensor has been developed by Lorentzen & Wett re (L&W), a division of ABB, and is claimed to make it possible to opti mise the wet end chemistry of the stock, enabling bett er runnability and increase paper quality. Sweden-based L&W says that its normal use is in single-point measurements between step foils or vacuum boxes. It is common to measure before or aft er the couch roll, to be able to esti mate

moisture content in the paper, before it leaves the wire. In multi -layer Fourdrinier machines all layers are easily monitored, providing a bett er overall picture to improve multi ple ply bonding. The instrument provides for control of foils adjustments, vacuum, refi ning and the use of retenti on chemicals.
The main advantages of
controlling drainage is said to be in reduced energy consumpti on, fewer number of web breaks, less emissions, lower usage of chemicals and a reducti on in wear and maintenance. These are benefi ts that lead to lower producti on costs, bett er runnability and increased paper
quality. The L&W FSD Sensor uses high frequency technology instead of radioacti vity and therefore requires no special permit to be used. “With this new sensor in
combinati on with our other portable instruments, it is possible to monitor the drainage profi le all the way from headbox to couch,” says Lars Kånge, L&W’s product manager. Paper making at the Rossano

Veneto mill goes back more than 250 years to its founding in 1736. The site has limited space which has infl uenced the design of the two paper making machines (with respecti ve widths of 1.55m and 2.48m), a rewinder, two cutti ng lines and an automati c packing line. Capacity is 50,000 tonnes a year in a range of papers that include ecological papers, coloured papers and boards, high quality white papers and boards,
