PROJECTS & CONTRACTS 31

Quality control upgrade for SCA Ortviken

S

CA’s Ortviken paper mill in Sweden is having the quality control system on its LWC4 paper

making line upgraded by power and automati on group ABB. The project scope includes a number of new functi ons and measurement scanners for the paper quality control process as well as integrati on of the new functi ons in the existi ng operator environment. The upgrading project represents the fi nal step of integrati ng the enti re control in one single operator environment in the paper line. The System 800xA QCS quality

control system with six operator stati ons will be integrated in a ‘virtualised’ server as well as in the existi ng operator environment for DCS and drive systems. SCA Ortviken is one of the

fi rst paper mills to use ABB’s technology for virtual operator

stati ons, which off ers benefi ts that include lower system maintenance and energy use since fewer hardware units are needed to do the work that previously required one computer for each operator. The order also includes

the replacement of older measurement scanners with the Network Platf orm including the latest technology such as a HPIR moisture measurements meter and an Opti cal Caliper thickness meter. Multi variable CD Control (MCD) is used for profi le control, which enables control decisions based on the most important paper quality aspects in every situati on. The new system will be commissioned in late May 2013. SCA Ortviken is one of the

largest paper mills in Sweden with four paper machines and a yearly output of 510,000 tons LWC and 380,000 tonnes of un-coated paper.

Stock preparation system ordered in Thailand

Siam Kraft Industry Co has ordered a stock preparati on system from Andritz Pulp & Paper for its PM16 corrugated board plant located in Thailand. A complete stock preparati on system and reject handling system

will be supplied by Austria-based Andritz including a drum pulping line with capacity of 1,200 tons per day based on 100 per cent local old corrugated container (LOCC) and a state-of-the-art reject handling system.

Lee & Man orders containerboard line

Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing’s paper mill at Chongqing in Sichuan Province, China, is having a containerboard producti on line installed by Metso. The PM20 line will produce high- quality containerboard with high strength properti es with a design speed of 1,100m/min for a capacity of 1,160 tonnes a day when it starts up in 2014. The value of the order was not revealed. “This producti on line opti mises

the machine investment in line with the mill’s capacity needs and ensures opti mised producti vity at minimal operati onal cost,” said Sami Antti lainen, R&D director of paper business line at Metso. The design of the line enables

easy and safe changing of rolls and wear parts, reducing service costs and maintenance shutdowns. A spacious walkway on the drive

side of the machine improves accessibility and safety. The project comprises a

Opti Concept M boardmaking line from headbox to reel with related air systems. A comprehensive automati on package comprises a mill-wide Metso DNA automati on soluti on with machine and process controls, a Metso IQ quality control system and a Metso IQ Diluti on Profi ler. The 7.25m-wide (wire) line will

produce testliner grades in the basis weight range of 70-160 g/m2 from recycled raw material. Founded in 1994 and with fi ve mills in China, Lee & Man Paper manufactures various linerboard and corrugati ng medium grades for a range of industrial packaging applicati ons. It also operates also in pulp making, plantati on and recovered paper collecti on.

Upgrade for Kartonsan’s Izmit board mill

Turkey’s Kartonsan Karton Sanayi ve Ticaret is planning to increase its duplex and triplex board producti on from 100,000 to 160,000 tons a year with an upgrade to its BM2 and related stock preparati on system at its Izmit mill.

Andritz will carry out the work

at the mill, which includes an upgrade of the board machine, which has a design speed of 450 metres per minute and reel width of 3.65 metres, with PrimeFlow SW headbox with diluti on control, rebuild of the fourdrinier wire and press secti ons with a PrimePress X shoe press, a new hood and air system, and rebuild of the pre- and aft er-dryer, hard calendar and

coati ng secti ons The 140 t/d deinking line will

also be rebuilt along with an upgrade of the backlayer line with deinking fl otati on unit and a thickener disc fi lter for an additi onal white ledger capacity of 85 t/d. The existi ng old corrugated

containers/mixed waste line with a capacity of 380 t/d will be rebuilt, as will the broke pulper adjustment, which will be augmented by a new broke thickener.

Andritz will also provide engineering, supervision, commissioning, start-up, training, and spare and wear part packages.
