System challenges traditional core cutting techniques
A
new approach to core cutting that uses less floor space in mills has been
developed by CFE Nordic in Sweden. Instead of having a long infeed
chute with the core pushed into the cutter, the core remains stationary and the saw unit moves along the core to the desired position. The cutting process is faster and the machine can be more efficiently sound insulated, says CFE.
Metso control technology for the corrugated industry
Process automation, measurement and control solutions for the pulp, paper and process industries developed by Metso are now available for the corrugated industry. Metso says they will enable
box makers to achieve visible improvements in their manufacturing processes. The products and services improve board quality in addition to increasing corrugator performance and machine utilisation.
“For Metso, it is a natural move
to also serve the corrugated industry,” says Mikko Talonen, product manager for Automation at Metso. “We understand the paper and board processes inside out and know the machines and their requirements well. Now we will offer our technology and expertise specifically to the corrugated industry.” That expertise includes a co-
operation agreement with Ram Peleg of RPC Consult in Denmark
who has long experience of the corrugated industry. The demand for corrugated
packaging is increasing since consumers are increasingly shopping online. With advanced quality control, the performance of corrugated board and output of corrugators can be significantly improved. The product and services offered
by Metso to the corrugated industry is extensive. For example, Metso’s IQ Moisturizer corrects

builders, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators looking to bring together components to form a motion control solution. The catalogue covers motion control
drives, machinery drives, micro drives, PLCs, HMIs and software, all of which can be seamlessly integrated to achieve a system with exceptional performance, efficiency and reliability.
The cutter can be operated manually or automatically, and can be upgraded as required. It
is said to offer higher capacity than traditional cutters, and with tighter tolerances.
The machine is also flexible:
by using a saw blade, a large range of core diameters can be cut without adjustments. It can easily be custom-built and furnished with hoppers or robot for parent cores with a range of configurations to transport cut cores to tables, carts or directly to the winder. More information CFE Nordic

Metso IQ Steam Profiler improves glue penetration and bonding as well as increaseing machine speed, especially with high-grammage virgin fibre liners. The Metso IQ Measurement family provides the most accurate real- time process information, which can be integrated into the process controls. More information from Mikko
