Biofuel moisture content quickly measured

P

ulp and paper mills that use biofuel power plants will benefit from the application of a moisture

analyser for the incoming fuel developed by Metso. Oven drying has been the

conventional standard for measuring moisture in biofuels. However, it requires both resources and time to provide accurate results. The Metso MR Moisture Analyzer enables power producers to measure moisture with less effort and lower costs.

With the moisture analyser, it is possible to accurately measure the water content of almost any bulk material, such as wood-based samples (whole-tree chips, forest residue chips, peat), annual fibres (straw, grains, willow), minerals, foodstuffs and sludge. The analyser is said to be easy

to use: a sample, up to 80cl in volume, is inserted into a container and instructions are provided on a touch-screen user interface. The device, which has no moving parts, is connected to

Measuring permeability for a range of contaminants

A system that measures how a range of contaminants that permeate into fibre-based packaging has been launched by UK-based Versaperm. Permeability is a key factor in a

range of products and processes, from cornflakes to drugs packaging and to paper jamming in printing machines. It is also a critical factor in packaging’s printability and the mechanical handling of paper, films and packaging. Versaperm’s permeability meter is claimed to be fast and reliable, producing results that are accurate to parts per million. For some packaging designs this can take as little as 30 minutes. It can as an option control temperature, pressure and other key variables. The latest equipment is designed

to measure any packaging’s permeability to water vapour (the most damaging contaminant), oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide,

the distributed control system or other plant systems using Ethernet Modbus. Moisture content is measured in less than two minutes. Samples no longer need to be taken to the laboratory, since the device measures them in field conditions thanks to its plug-and-play functionality. The measuring accuracy is plus or minus 1 per cent across a 10-90 per cent range. To further increase measurement

efficiency, the analyser can be part of a complete Metso

fuel management solution. By integrating it with Metso DNA Fuel Data Manager, fuel management from gate to boiler can be efficiently covered. More information from Arvo Rahikkala, Business Manager, Power and Minerals, Automation, Metso. Tel: 358 20 483 2269. Email: arvo.rahikkala@metso.com

New automation service centre for Thailand’s pulp and paper mills

hydrocarbons and other gases and vapours. A wide range of options and sensors is available, depending on the specific application. Multi-chamber systems allow measurements to be produced on several samples at the same time and different designs and clamping systems cater for a range of samples. More information from

A new automation service centre has been opened in Thailand by Metso. The Ratchaburi facility strengthens Metso’s service capabilities for process automation products and valves in the Thai pulp and paper industry, with customers such as Siam Cement Group (SCG), which has a pulp mill and several paper mills in the area. “Our customers like Siam Cement Group demand faster service response times and want us to increase our service scope. The new service centre supports strongly our Automation business in Thailand,” says Henry Chong, Metso’s regional sales director for automation in South East Asia.

The new automation service

centre is 80 km east of Bangkok close to two of the major Siam Cement Group complexes, Wangsala and Banpong. The new facility includes modern training and testing facilities, a valve repair shop and a storage facility for spare parts. Metso has been expanding its global services with a valve supply and service centre in Vadodara, India, and recently acquired US-based ExperTune Inc, whose products are used as software tools to analyse and monitor the performance of industrial processes.
