yes, there was a language barrier, but it’s amazing how emotions can transcend language with a hug and a heartfelt smile. i wanted so desperately to hug each one of the girls in our home, but each was different from the next. some would shy away with embar- rassed smiles as i approached, while others came right up to feel my embrace or touch my hand. as the person at WMe who sees their images in photographs on a daily basis, i can’t tell you what i experienced when i was face-to-face with them. even if i didn’t remember their names, i would see a child and immediately recognize them. it was like going to a reunion and see- ing family you’ve never known. despite never having met them, i could still feel the connection.
