eing chosen Mayor is a great privilege. The Mayor is in that special position of representing the whole town; locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Day to day activities will include meeting the office staff, fellow Council- lors, visitors in the Mayor’s parlour, plus attendance at daytime and evening com- mittees. Visiting organisations and being available on behalf of the Town either in person or though my very able Deputy elect is at the heart of the role. It is often surprising to find “The Mayor” being expected to answer every question as though it was their personal fault especially if something goes wrong. It is a fact that the Mayor does not have the answer to every problem. However, contacting the Mayor as the focus of the Town does engender a sense of identity for Dartmouth, with the ability of an im- partial Mayor to absorb rather than react to certain comments.
As Mayor in the current session and Mayor Elect for the ensuing year, I look forward to serving Dartmouth in a variety of ways that require, not only from myself but also from the Deputy Mayor and Council members, a total dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to your Town. It was most enjoyable
first came to Dartmouth some thirty-five years ago when friends bought a thirty- two foot yacht and asked me to join them and sail this lovely coast of Devon. This we did fairly regularly for three years until I decided to buy our own boat. From this the die was cast! Family holidays whilst the children were young; weekend sailing trips; friendships formed and a decision to move to Dartmouth as soon as possible. We bought our house in Victoria Road over 23 years ago and still live there. My involvement in the community of Dartmouth has been varied over the years; from working at Vosper Thorneycroft; buying, renovating and successfully running The Seale

but one that indicates the tradition of this great Town in following through a time honoured system. The Mayor also has the title of Chairman of the Town Council, a position of great honour and not one for a personal agenda but, as with any good Chairman, a role that should allow everyone to have their say before reach- ing a consensus.

on behalf of the Town to be present at the recent Rotary Lunch when they took the opportunity to “toast the achievers” in Dartmouth. What was evident at the event is the rich diversity of individuals that make our Town so special and the individual dedication – “Stickability”- that so many have to a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. Our local press state that the Mayor elect is to be the 684th - a simple fact,

arms for five years with my wife Di, her brother and his wife; starting the Dart Music Festival in 1998 with Nigel Way and Roger Kempton. I am now President of the Festival and am still hugely supportive of this brilliant event and the wonderful people who organise it. Di was Parish Secretary for eight years after we left The Seale Arms and is still very involved in the Festival as its Treasurer and Secretary. When Roger Kempton said he would try to become a Town Councillor I said I would too but, sadly, never got around to it when he was on the Council. However after the sad death of roger I thought I would try and carry on his good works and become a Councillor, which I did in 2011.”
The last year has seen the Council support the proposed new Indoor Pool and the opportunity for us to comment on any proposals for housing develop- ment. In addition, the commercial and social interests of the Town (that also includes parking) continue to be high on our Agenda. We have had additions to our Council and I am pleased to say that our new Councillors are actively taking part in shaping the future of the Council and its services, working as part of the team and contributing in a very positive manner, bringing with them skills and abilities for the benefit of all. The coming 12 months will be excit- ing, especially the celebrations for the 150th Anniversary of Britannia Royal Naval College. I hope we all have an opportunity to say “thanks” in whatever way possible for the many benefits that their presence in Dartmouth brings.”
