ver the past few months, there have been numerous problems with Yahoo and BT Internet accounts being compromised. Whilst Yahoo has said they have plugged two security loopholes, the problem seems to persist. Attacks typically consist of Yahoo users receiving an email from a friend or colleague containing a link that if clicked on, results in the account being hijacked. Some say their hijacked accounts send emails to select individuals; others report they get sent to all their contacts. If you do have a problem then make sure you change the password on the account immediately. There have been reports that some users have been unable to access their secret questions so it is important to check the security questions and account recovery options.

saying they are stuck in a far off country and need funds to return home. These often come personalised with the persons name and they look very genuine.


How to Tell a Scam Apart from employing a good helping of common sense, sometimes you can tell if an email is a scam. Firstly, look at the email address of the sender. Does it look genuine? Secondly if there is a link within the email HOVER over it (DO NOT CLICK IT) – this will show the address of the page where you will be taken – this generally bears no resemblance to the company that it is allegedly from.

These are “phishing emails” - where digital thieves lure you into divulging your password info through convincing emails and web pages. Remember – your bank will never email you.
