the ultimate bel canto cast is assembled for this important yet rarely performed masterpiece. based on Sir walter Scott’s poem the lady of the lake, it is the most fully romantic of rossini’s italian operas. expansive ensembles and shimmering orchestration generate an opulence seldom heard in the composer’s comic works. John Fulljames’s staging evokes the exoticized mystery of rossini’s romantic landscape and provides an insight into this rich but under- explored seam of operatic gold. Sung in italian.

Ariadne auf naxos by richard Strauss. Sung in german with english subtitles. the 2013 glyndebourne Festival opens with a new production of this compelling and intricately crafted collaboration between composer richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. At a sumptuous home, two theatre troupes are preparing for their performances: a commedia dell’arte group, led by the comedienne Zerbinetta, and an opera company presenting a serious opera, Ariadne auf naxos. the major-domo announces that, to save time, both entertainments must be performed simultaneously. the idealistic young composer is loath to permit any changes to his opera. when his teacher, the music master, points out that his pay depends on his accepting the situation, and when Zerbinetta turns her charms upon him, he complies. but when he fully realises what he has agreed to, he storms out.

A story based on true events, of the trout family of Hallsands, the South Devon fishing village devoured by the raging sea in the early part of the twentieth century. this new play by linda Churchill (blow the wind Fair & From Floods Defend) relates a powerful tale of poverty, endurance, perseverance, remarkable success and final disintegration. it presents a unique account of this small fishing community and the remarkable ella and Patience trout who built the trout’s Hotel, high above the old village. edie was the youngest of the trout sisters who spent the last 15 years of her life as a recluse in the empty Hotel.
