Dart Notes D
WHAT’S NEWS & WHAT’S NEW IN AND AROUND DARTMOUTH TOuR De FRANCe
artmouth rowing champ Chris China (pictured right) is preparing to undertake a gruelling 1,000-mile charity pedal bash across France. The 22-year-old, who is a member of Dartmouth
Rowing Club, and eight of his fellow Kingston university students have set themselves the challenge of cycling from London’s Cenotaph to Monaco on the French Riviera in aid of Help for Heroes. Team Cycle for Heroes plan to set off on July 26
and reckon if they cycle 120miles per day the taxing task will take them 10 days to complete. The pals hope their tough mission will raise £10,000 for the charity which helps wounded servicemen and women of the British Armed Forces. The route will take the team to Dover where
they will board a ferry across the english Channel to Calais. From there the cyclists will carve a route along
the French countryside tragically famed by the scars of war, passing through the somme Valley and nearby military cemeteries before tackling the demanding mountain road passes of the French Alps towards Monte Carlo on the Mediterranean coast. Cycle for Heroes will be accompanied by a support
vehicle which will carry all the kit such as camping equipment, supplies and spares. The team pledge to donate every penny they raise to Help for Heroes, promising to pay for all expenses, including van hire, petrol, food and spares, out of their own pockets. Chris, who is studying product and furniture design at the London-based university, said: ‘As soon as I heard about the event I wanted to get involved because it sounded like a huge physical challenge and an opportunity to raise a large amount of money for charity. ‘I have been rowing for nearly 10 years now and
have always enjoyed pushing myself to my physical limits. ‘I have also recently gotten into road cycling and
train regularly on my bike so it seemed a perfect challenge for me.
‘In terms of the charity this was agreed as a
team, however I know there are members of the local community who have served in the forces and been affected by war. Help for Heroes offers great support for such people and I wanted to raise money to continue the great work they do. ‘I am very excited for the challenge as it takes us to some iconic destinations and beautiful landscapes
and offers some treacherous climbs in the mountain stages’.
Chris said all donations are welcome as well as help with food, support vehicles and equipment. To make a donation or to follow the team visit www.
