I

t’s been almost a year since the locally popular Anzac street Bistro (& associated B&B business) changed ownership. New

owners, Aga Malec and simon edwards spoke to By The Dart recently about their experiences so far and their plans for the future. simon has been visiting Dartmouth for more than 20 years and has long harboured a dream to move here and establish a new lifestyle for himself having previously worked in retail (watch & jewellery-making) in the Midlands. When he first brought Aga here on holiday 6 years ago, it was a dream they were soon both to share – for Aga, living by the sea is a bit like coming home. With Aga’s background in helping to run restaurants and bars back in the Midlands, they quickly jumped at the opportunity to buy Anzac st Bistro when it came available. Along with new chef, Rafal Janas (previously at the Royal Cas- tle and Dartmouth Golf Club), they have focused their energies in maintaining Anzac’s reputation as a proper bistro where the dining experience is relaxed. Diners are welcome to just have one course if necessary. Given Aga’s nationality means there are always some traditional Polish choices on the menu but there’s also a balanced mix of vegetarian options (more than is usually found in other restaurants), pasta and Mediterranean dishes as well as local steak and fish. Dishes are priced very much mid- range with starters from £4.50 and main courses from £8.50. At lunchtime, they serve smaller versions of the evening dishes as well as sandwiches, salads and pasta. The bistro is open from 11am – 3pm for lunch and from 7pm – 10pm in the evening (12pm – 8pm on sundays). It’s closed on Mondays except Bank Holidays and Regatta. The B&B upstairs keeps the team busy with 3 double rooms including one family room. Rooms are large and comfortably

furnished with free wif-fi and tea/coffee facilities etc (Visit eng- land - 4 stars) with prices from £75 - £105 per room per night. Although they have worked harder than they expected, they

are enjoying their new lifestyle. They’ve found the town and business community very supportive and relish how interesting and helpful are the people they have met, residents and visitors alike. Mondays are kept free and are very precious during their busy week often spent exploring and walking the local country- side and coastline.
