Survival Holidays

Holidays at HOME

Research conducted at the end of 2012 found 29 per cent of UK adults will holiday at home in 2013. For families with young children, this figure grew to 46 per cent and it’s not difficult to see why with so much to see and do on our doorstep. Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Travelsupermarket highlights a selection of great destinations for you and the family this year.

M London

My first pick is the capital. Top attractions include: London Zoo, The London Aquarium, The London

any families may choose to head to the coast to enjoy some of Britain’s beaches, however, cities can offer just as much fun with a range of historic, cultural and tourist

attractions, including zoos, aquariums and excellent playgrounds children will love.

Blazing sunshine might not be guaranteed on

UK shores, but across the summer months we are fortunate to enjoy gentle, moderate climes. Here’s a rundown of my top suggestions for a UK getaway this summer and what to enjoy in each.

Transport Museum which has a learning zone, ‘driver’s eye’ simulators and a play area for under- fives, The Natural History Museum (for the dinosaur gallery) and the Science Museum. An added bonus – all national museums are free for all (although accept donations). The city is easy to get around – kids will love travel- ling by the iconic red double-decker buses and children up to 11 travel free on buses, trams and the Tube. The London Eye is another great family activity and will show children the scale of the city or take a trip up the Shard to the UK’s highest viewing platform for views across the city. Taking a river cruise is another good option. Finally, you might think children would find a day shopping a little dull; however a stroll along Oxford Street/Regent Street and a visit to Hamley’s will be a child’s dream come true! The fourth floor of Harrods is also sure to wow with an impressive collection of toys.

Manchester Air & Space Hall at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester

One of Manchester’s biggest attractions is the Man- chester United Museum and Stadium Tour – a great day out if your children are interested in the world’s biggest football club. If not, The Museum of Science and Industry offers plenty to see and do, while the Imperial War Museum (north) or the Manchester Gal- lery offer a more educational day out. Manchester is also home to an excellent collection of theatres and entertainment venues so time your visit to take in some of the best shows in the north.

York York is home to England’s largest medieval cathedral – York Minster. A spectacular site, children will enjoy taking in the range of colourful glass stained windows and perhaps a walk around the city’s walls. York has four excellent child friendly museums:

The Yorkshire Museum, York Castel Museum, National Railway Museum, and the Jorvik Viking Centre – all worth a look. Boat trips and child-friendly ghost tours are also good fun for the brave!
