e sat by the water’s edge, clothed in salt water spray and itchy sand grains. Glancing up, we gave a shout as we saw the tide rushing in quickly.
Tripping over our own feet, we plopped down in front of our castle in an attempt to keep the water from ruining our hard work. But it was no use; we were no match for the power of the waves—they rushed over us, welling into the moat, splashing over the walls, and licking the edges of our precarious towers, destroying their foundations.
And then, as if to totally extinguish our hopes of ever recouping our losses, the tide pulled back out, dragging along with it the sand, leaving nothing but insignificant lumps and indentations behind.
While those days of building sandcastles have long since gone, I still remember the immense frustration my siblings and I would feel seeing our hard work so easily destroyed. But, time and
again, we would begin building feet away from the water’s edge, only to have our masterpiece destroyed.
Looking back now, I laugh; it was the water, or rather, the convenience of not having to lug buckets of water further up the beach, that kept us there. And it was the water yet once more which became our nemeses.
I laugh, but I sigh too, because like so many other times in my life, the struggles I faced in such miniscule proportions when I was little are so very much like the ones I face today which seem so very large. And knowing that, I can’t help but feel that my large problems today are going to feel very small indeed as life continues.
About eight months ago, I discovered that my body has an intolerance to gluten—the elastic protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. My body cannot digest gluten properly, resulting in horrible three-day migraines if I eat it.
