Roofs 20 years on top for Seamsil

When well known retail giants such as Next, Boots, Peacocks and Clarks found that their pvc coated metal roof sheets on the Newport Retail Park site were suffering from cut edge corrosion it was only natural that they turned to Seamsil, the silicone repair system from manufacturers Delvemade Limited. After all, most of them had already been using Seamsil as their principle edge repair system for almost 20 years with total success.

Premier construction company Marshall Construction called in Seamsil approved applicator Maywood Painting Contractors to undertake the repair of these critical areas which if not treated quickly and effectively can result in the need for major roof sheet replacement.

Seamsil, developed 20 years ago by Delvemade Limited in conjunction with British Steel, has been used to solve the problem of cut edge corrosion on throusands of pvc and pvf2 coated metal roofs throughout the UK and Europe. The system has even proved successful in the harsh environment of Antartica where it was used over 10 years ago with great success.

The Seamsil 100 system is designed specifically to treat cut edge corrosion on overlap joints, flashings and gutter overlaps, in fact anywhere where the sheet has been cut either on site or in the factory and the cut ends have not been treated and protected during construction.

Made from pure corrosion resistant silicone Seamsil is totally unique and its track record of 20 years of success prove it to be the one and only viable solution for the ongoing problem of cut edge corrosion.

RigiSystems on the right track at Paddington Station

Around 3,000sq m of one of RigiSystems Creative Profiles were used to create a contemporary look and feel to the fourth span of Paddington Station’s roof.

The fourth span was added in 1916 to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s original three-span design, but it fell into disrepair in the 1990’s. Contractor Morgan

Sindall had the daunting task of creating the new structure on the Grade 1 listed building, serving up to 180,000 passengers a day, while keeping six platforms operational and watertight.

The result is a triumph. The ‘saw tooth’ profile, in 1.2mm thickness steel, is plastisol coated on both sides in Goosewing Grey on the outside and Terracotta on the inside. The effect is dramatic on the inside while blending perfectly with the London skyline when viewed from the outside.

With the soaring price of materials, lead theft is a crime that has been sweeping over Britain as thieves strip millions of pounds of lead flashing from buildings to sell on to unscrupu- lous dealers. Thousands of properties, including many historic buildings and churches have been targeted so far and the resultant damage costs can be extremely high. With the cost of lead set to remain at record highs, the lead theft problem shows no sign of going away soon.

In response to this problem, Belzona are offering a liquid applied polymeric membrane system to fully encapsulate the lead providing long term protection against thieves. In addition to the major issue of theft, lead is susceptible to damage and deterioration due to extreme weather conditions and pollution. Belzona’s solution provides weatherproofing capabilities, preventing moisture ingress and reducing deterioration resulting in long term roof protection and preservation of the lead.

By utilising a cold repair and protection solution, lead work can be fully encapsulated resulting in a highly effective theft reduction system.

Belzona also offer a system which can replace lead should it have been stolen. The Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) in dark grey colour has been found to be an excellent aesthetic repair method that simulates the look of lead.

By way of example, in 2008, a local school had suffered from the theft of lead on their roof. The damage was so extensive that if not

The BBA has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to provide certification to MCS012 which outlines the requirements for pitched roof installation kits. The document addresses three aspects of performance: resistance to wind loading, reaction to fire and resistance to water penetration.

From 16th September 2013 it will be mandatory for all pitched roof installation kits to be approved to MCS012 by an accredited Certification Body such as the BBA.

BBA Test Services has invested in a test rig specifically designed to perform the weathertightness and resistance to wind uplift tests so interested parties are advised to contact us as soon as possible to beat the deadline.

addressed, it would have led to structural defects resulting in potentially disruptive high cost repairs.

A Belzona local respresentative was contacted to provide a cost effective solution to repair the damage and protect against future deterioration without the use of lead, whilst retaining the original appearance. The repair was completed in less than one week and on revisiting the application in 2012, it was confirmed the school has not experi- enced any further problems, with the repair still in service and in excellent condition.
