PlayFair joins IOG Saltex at Windsor Racecourse
The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) is delighted to announce that the 2013 PlayFair exhibition is moving to the IOG Saltex event at Windsor Racecourse.
In a deal struck by PlayFair organiser Brintex Events, with the support of the Association of Play Industries (API), Playfair’s move to co-locate with IOG Saltex is a welcome development.
The Dutch 7-a-side Football team and Ledley King, former captain and now ambassador of Tottenham Hotspur have officially opened a Cruyff Court on the Ferry Lane Estate in Tottenham. In the neighbourhood where serious riots broke out, this ballcourt will contribute to the efforts to regenerate the area and provide young people with a safe place to play sports.
Ledley King said, “It’s a great facility. I can only wish there were more things like this available to me when I was a young person growing up in inner city London. There’s been a lot of negativity surrounding the area of Tottenham over the past year but develop- ments like this go to show this community is moving in the right direction. Hopefully we can find the budding sportspeople of the future making use of this facility.”
Haringey Council Deputy Leader Cllr Bernice Vanier, said, “Today has been a really fun and exciting day for the Ferry Lane Estate. It’s great to see the Cruyff Court and the multi-use games area up and running, and i’m sure that our young people will make the very best of the new facilities. Opening the MUGA was one of Haringey Council’s 12 in 2012 pledges to bring improvements to Tottenham throughout the year, and i’m delighted that together with our partners we’ve been able to deliver on that pledge.”

The Cruff Court, with its latest generation facilities, including 3G astroturf from TenCate is located next to a basketball and tennis court, and is specially adapted to allow people with disabilities to use the court as well. The playground is accessible to everyone and is used for various organised sports activities for the youth, such as the Kickz project of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.
Grant Cornwell MBE, Chief Executive of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said, “This fantastic new facility is a major boost for the area and will help the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation continue to deliver life changing opportunities at the heart of our community, along with helping to inspire the next generation of young people to take up sport. We would like to thank the Cruyff Foundation for all their support in helping to make this possible.”
This is the second Cruyff Court in London. The first, Cruyff Court Dennis Bergkamp, was opened in 2008. This playground is located in the District of Islington and is very successful. In total, there are now 162 Cruyff Courts worldwide, of which 136 are located in the Netherlands.

Vice Chair of the API, Michael Hoenigmann, said, “After five successful years of PlayFair at Stoneleigh Park, an excellent opportunity arose to run PlayFair alongside the IOG Saltex annual trade exhibition. It will give the outdoor play industry an ideal platform to
promote its services and products to a wider and national audience of buyers and specifiers in the outdoor amenity sector.”
The IOG has run IOG Saltex, the UK’s leading event for groundscare, sports, amenities, estates and green space management at Windsor Racecourse since 1979. A toddler play area has been given an exciting make-over to make it more accessible for children with disabilities.
Queens Park, Caterham is one of two larger destination play areas in the Tandridge District, East Surrey. Its toddler area has been transformed by playground experts Sutcliffe Play to enable inclusive play.
The new play area was revamped thanks to a successful grant application to Surrey County Council by Play Safely - a registered charity which raises funds for Queens Park area and maintains it in partnership with Tandridge District Council - with funding from Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children (formerly Aiming High for Disabled Children). The play area has both excellent access and some unique inclusive multi- sensory play elements.
The main focal point of the new play area is an inclusive Kinderland wooden sand play station, packed with activities. It is integrated by a sand chute and pull up scoop, with an adjacent sandpit, but also has a raised sand tray, designed for a wheelchair or a child standing.
Access is by way of undulating playful ramps, and activities include a curved mirror, musical chimes, optical illusion play stations, games and learning activities. Children can also enjoy a seated hammock in a gazebo under a dappled shade canopy.
Other inclusive equipment elsewhere in the park includes an inclusive roundabout, a multi-rocker seesaw, bongos play panels and tactile orbs which create intriguing sounds when rocked.
The equipment sits on a colourful carpet of safety surfacing, brightening the area and allowing greater access for all.
“We’re delighted with the new play area which enables children of all abilities to play together and have fun,” says Rosie Jones, Chairman of Play Safely. “The equipment has already been very well received by children, parents and carers and we’re sure it will draw more visitors to the area.”
