Hybrid helps deliver BREEAM excellence at M&S
Senior’s Hybrid Series 3 Curtain Walling has been chosen by M&S for its new flagship store at Cheshire Oaks. The Timber Aluminium Composite System perfectly complements the ‘Wave Style Roof’ built from over 1400m3 of 100% FSC-certified, curved Glulam timber beams. The new store may be the most high profile, sustainable, retail project ever undertaken to date which achieves a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ rating.
The new store, designed by Aukett Fitzroy Robinson (AFR), sets new standards for sustainability in the UK retail sector and is the largest store for the retail giant outside London, covering a sales area of 18,100m2. One of the reasons for the stores low environmental impact is its extensive use of renewable materials. Senior’s Hybrid Curtain Wall reflects these design principles perfectly with its 100% PEFC-certified internal Mullions and Transoms, complete with its high performance, 100% recyclable, Aluminium Glazing Profiles to the outside.
The innovative and sustainable design approach adopted by AFR is in line with Marks & Spencer’s ‘Plan A’; a policy which aims to make them the most sustainable retailer in the world. Together with Rainwater Harvesting, LED Low Energy Lighting, and Roof Insulation derived from recycled bottle glass, to name but a few, the store is one of the first to harness natural light. By using a large area of Hybrid Curtain Walling, with Cedar Wood Brise Soleil and north- facing Rooflights, the new store maximises the best use of indirect natural light. Not normally utilised in a retail environment, the use of natural light offers further energy savings which, in turn, helps with the attainment of further BREEAM points.
Senior’s Hybrid Timber Profiles are constructed in a similar way to that of Glulam Beams, albeit in a much smaller cross section of a slim 50mm width for the Curtain Wall system. Protecting the engineered timber section is a water based lacquer which provides a long lasting internal finish for the profile. On large projects both the timber species and the colour of lacquer can be specified. Using an engineered timber in this way ensures that the completed lacquered Mullion or Transom Profile is structurally stable and free from twisting and warping. Mullions are then sized to meet the required strength criterion to counter wind loading and being able to carry the dead loads of high performance glazed units of up to 28mm in thickness. Whilst timber is not an excessively good insulator, when coupled with Hybrid’s high performance thermal break and plastic pressure plate, high levels of insulation are achieved which puts Hybrid into an ‘A’ rated product.
In recent years there has been a shift by the major high street retailers to prove that their products are ethically sourced both from the UK and abroad. As consumers become much better informed through the internet, they are making the choice on where they shop and what they purchase. From battery chicken produced eggs to ‘free range eggs’ the shifts in consumer choice can be significant and the retailer who can capture the hearts and minds of consumers will be the winners. M&S won the Responsible Retailer of the Year Award 2011 and continues to promote ‘Plan A’ with its aim to become a carbon neutral operation and ‘the world’s most sustainable major retailer’ by 2015. As consumers become more informed, Senior’s are also seeing a significant increase in the use of Hybrid products in home improvement. Hybrid is available in both commercial and residential windows designs. Despite the condition of the economy, consumers are warming to source ethically sourced products whilst wishing to link themselves to companies who have the same green agenda.
Officially opened on the 29th August, M&S Cheshire Oaks sets the benchmark for ‘green’ retail space in the UK. Senior’s have been proud to be a partner with such an innovative building and a forward looking client such as M&S. Senior’s look forward to future involvement in innovative green design projects around the UK.
