Tremco window seals specified for multiple Manchester sites

and Tremco illbruck’s Duo Window Membrane are being used by sub-contractor, Per-Fit to complete the installation of its PVC-U fenestration system.

A collaborative social housing project covering four sites in Manchester is not only aimed at providing much needed affordable accommo- dation, but is also attempting to create highly energy efficient dwellings, with products from the range of Tremco illbruck being chosen to form flexible and airtight seals around the openings in the envelope.

The West Gorton Partnership brings together the skills and resources of Bramall Construc- tion North-West and Stockport based GB Building Solutions to construct a total of 160 flats and houses across the four sites, on behalf of Manchester City Council. The Bowker-Sadler Partnership, meanwhile, is the architectural consultancy employed by the two main contractors for this demanding design and build; based around timber frame technology.

All of the properties will achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes as well as the Lifetime Homes standard, with air leakage rates well below those required by the Building Regulations being targeted. As a result Compriband TP600, TP450 Timbermax

One of the Project Architectural Technologists, for the Bowker Sadler Partnership, Kirsty Medcraft, comments, “We have employed Compriband 600 on projects in the past to take up the movement in timber frame systems, and in this instance we also received a lot of help on the design from Tremco’s technical representative. We are trying to achieve an air leakage rate of five cubic metres per hour (per square metre) on the flats, and a figure of just four for the houses.”

Tremco illbruck created huge interest at this year’s Ecobuild by exhibiting a cutaway window installation that demonstrated the use of its i3 system for sealing the reveal. Similar to the solution being employed for the West Gorton Partnership, i3 offers the combined benefits of weather-tightness and insulation along with controlling air leakage while still remaining vapour permeable.

Trend GB of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, the British distribution and marketing arm of the Italian mosaics producer, has developed another CPD (continuing professional development) seminar for architects, interior designers and specifiers, this time focusing on sustainability in agglomerate and glass mosaic finishing materials. The content and presentation has been accredited by the Construction CPD Certification Service, as conforming to personal and professional development principles. It complements Trend’s earlier certified CPD workshop, which looks in detail at hard surface agglomerates and their widespread commercial applications.

The Trend Group produces 1.5 million square metres of glass mosaic tiles and 1 million linear metres of agglomerate surfaces annually and over the last few years has implemented an enterprise-wide ‘green- policy’, designed to reduce its environmental impact and maintain a programme of sustainable products and processes. With green procurement on the new building and refurbishment agenda. Trend’s UK office felt it was timely to produce a professional presentation detailing the green credentials of glass mosaics and eco-conscious manufacturing processes.

The informative Powerpoint presentation, illustrated with colourful visual material and project pictures, runs for around one hour, including Q&A session, and is hosted by one of Trend GB’s business development team. It is supported by CPD attendance certificates, seminar notes and self-

Fire Rated Caviclosers - What is the Cavi Rating?

The use of cavity closers to form reveals within cavity walls is an undertaking that has recently taken a change of direction. This stems from the growing need to also incorporate fire-integrity rated measures and acoustic suppression measures. At the same time the closer must support a thermally- efficient arrangement whilst acting as a vertical damp course throughout the height of the opening reveal.

The range of updated cavity closers (or ‘caviclosers’ as they are now popularly called) released by Yeovil based Cavity Trays Ltd, are designed to provide all the requisite qualities - efficiently and economically.

assessment records for filing purposes, with product samples and technical test data available for inspection.

Suitable for professional audiences of up to twenty or more, Trend’s CPD seminar can be delivered in a suitable conference or meeting room, either to an entire practice or a prearranged gathering of industry colleagues. The seminar is free of charge and Trend GB is able to assist with room hire.

Every fire-rated cavicloser is branded with a logo identifying its fire integrity rating. The highest rating is Cavi 240 - indicating 240 minutes (four hours) protection. Cavi ratings vary from Cavi 60 up to Cavi 240 and specifiers may select the most appropriate cavicloser to suit their intended application and performance. Caviclosers have been independently tested at a fire research establishment in accordance with the BS476 (fire resistance) and are available to suit a wide range of cavity widths up to 170mm.

“Providing a Cavi rating number as a prefix products offers a visual and easy to understand method of identification”

commented a company spokesperson. “We also offer continuity cavicloser options where the insulating medium is cranked in profile to wrap around the edge of any partial fill cavity insulation. The continuity option ensures any gaps between the two are blocked thus eliminating common heat-loss paths”.

Caviclosers are accompanied with a performance warranty undertaking for the benefit of Architect, Builder and Client - at no additional cost. Ask for the latest cavicloser manual from Cavity Trays of Yeovil - the only cavity tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval.
