2013: The Year of the Fitness Professional

Get ready for a year of opportunity and success. BY SCOTT WILDEMAN W

hen asked about what is new and upcoming in the fitness industry, my answer is simple. There

is nothing new, only better. I believe that 2013 will be the year of the fitness professional. Fitness professionals will create better relationships with mem- bers, colleagues, other professionals and within their communities. Fitness professionals will enhance their pro- gramming to better serve members, and we will see record breaking usage statistics. Our industry is close to hitting criti-

cal mass, and that is due to the tire- less dedication of fitness professionals across the country! Fitness professionals will focus on

small group personal training, creating relationships and assisting more people in reaching their goals than ever be- fore. The demand for personal training is at an all time high. Members from all walks of life are seeking the guid- ance of professionals to assist them in realizing their ambitions. This is creat- ing an availability issue in a number of facilities. To successfully meet the de- mand, many personal trainers are turn- ing to small groups during peak hours. I know a number of trainers who work only with groups of three to six people during peak hours. I believe that as many personal

trainers graduate from their train- ing with the skill set for one on one training, CEC courses geared toward small groups will become increasingly popular. Fitness professionals will also em-

brace the post-rehabilitation market, creating relationships with health prac- titioners (physiotherapists, athletic therapists, chiropractors, etc.) and de- veloping the skills to work successfully

with this group of clients. Baby boom- ers are looking for wellness. They want to be able to enjoy their retirement years without pain and will be seeking the services of qualified fitness profes- sionals to help them do so. Personal trainers will be obtaining

their group fitness certifications to of- fer athletic-style classes, like boxing circuits, CrossFit, P90x and core stabil- ity. This will enable them to build re- lationships with a larger audience and help more people. I also believe that the word will fi-

nally get out that fitness is a desir- able and viable career choice, and that many high school graduates will be looking for educational opportunities that allow them to join the movement. It’s going to be a fun year!
