need to leave such wide gaps between arriving or departing aircraft, resulting in fewer delays for passengers, and considerable fuel saving for airlines: NAV CANADA estimates that the WAM system will save airlines over $300,000 per year in fuel costs. Needless to say, there is a corresponding environmental benefit to this reduced fuel use.

Having tighter control of aircraft movements isn’t just about saving time and money – it may actually save lives. Paul England tells of a recent Medivac flight from YLW which was able to be cleared for an immediate departure; prior to WAM being installed it would have had to wait for an incoming aircraft to land before being allowed to take off.

The WAM installation was a true partnership between YLW and NAV CANADA.

“We have a great relationship with the airport” says England, a sentiment echoed by Samaddar, who draws attention to the additional benefits the new system brings to YLW, its airline partners and passengers. Ground maintenance vehicles, such as those used by snow removal or runway inspection crews, used to have to leave the runway well before an approaching flight. Now crews can stay longer on the tarmac while still leaving the runway safely before aircraft land, while the runway lights can be switched on later than previously, reducing both costs and environmental impact.

Samaddar is also looking for ways to achieve further benefits from WAM in partnership with NavCanada. For example, vehicles requiring access to the runway could also be fitted with transponders, and their locations identified and controlled relative to air traffic, improving safety while reducing the need for verbal communication or visual tracking. Infra-red cameras could

be integrated with the system to spot animals on or near the tarmac. And while the immediate benefits of WAM are realised today in improved safety, reduced costs and fewer delays, the long-term ability to improve capacity to land or depart more aircraft per hour could provide significant reductions or delays to infrastructure costs for years into the future.
