I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM HOORAY FOR WESTJET!

The first flight to Los Angeles (LAX) on WestJet left Kelowna International Airport (YLW) Saturday November 3, 2012 just before 5 p.m.. Over 70 guests were on the inaugural flight – many of whom were on their way to Disneyland. WestJet will fly between YLW and LAX every Saturday until the end of April. To help celebrate the new WestJet LAX service YLW staff handed out ice cream cones to guests as they were about to board their flight.

In addition to the LAX service WestJet also offers seasonal scheduled service to Los Cabos, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Phoenix AZ and Las Vegas through to the end of April.

DREAMING ABOUT EUROPE?

The springtime is a popular season to fly to Europe. To help those deciding where to go or what to do and to provide others with information how easy it is to fly to European destination from Kelowna International Airport, YLW is hosting its annual European Travel Event on Saturday February 23 between 11am and 3 pm.

Travel agents, tour operators and airline partners will have information booths and presentations in the Airport terminal. The public is invited to this free event to gather information, listen to music and maybe if they are lucky … win a holiday! Parking is free for those who park in the Long-term lot and bring in their parking voucher to be validated at the event.

ART INSTALLATION BY LOCAL ARTIST DAWN EMERSON

Travellers making their way towards the departure gates will now be greeted by a series of images of trees that create the illusion of movement.

For her installation at YLW titled Certain Movement, Kelowna-based artist Dawn Emerson has created a seven-paneled work using mixed media

on sheets of mylar, exploring images of trees, which meander over the forty- foot-long wall in the well-wishing area just before the airport security gates. Emerson was inspired by the digital work of Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Steinkamp, which she saw installed at the Phoenix Art Museum when on a recent trip to Arizona, and from this worked to incorporate the sensation of

movement in her piece. Passers-by may find themselves intrigued by the slightly disjointed impression created by Certain Movement, the way objects can appear to us while moving on a train, car, or airplane. Or, viewers may choose to simply enjoy the vibrant greenery of the trees contrasted by the wintery landscape unfolding outside. Certain Movement will be on view until May 6, 2013.
