Local Wines HONOURED WITH PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS
T
hree wines from the Okanagan region were recently recognized with the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in British Columbia Wines. Eleven wines in total
were chosen in a field of 347 submissions from 94 wineries from across the province. This was the largest number of entries in the 10-year history of the awards.
In 2003, the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in British Columbia Wines were established by then-Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo to recognize and honour excellence in the province’s growing wine industry.
To be eligible for the competition, wines must be made from 100 per cent grapes grown and processed within British Columbia. Wineries may enter up to four wines in the competition. A tasting panel of distinguished wine judges and critics selects eight to 12 wines that, in their view, have achieved “excellence.” The Lieutenant Governor visits the winning wineries and personally presents the awards each summer.
Kelowna International Airport was selected by the Province to display the award-winning wines as it best represents the entire Okanagan region in one locale. All award-winning wines can be seen on display in the airport’s departure area.
The Lieutenant Governor travelled to Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate to present Winemaker Derek Kontkanen and Vineyard Manager Troy Osborne with his award for Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate Entourage Sparkling 2008.
To find your favourite Okanagan wines visit the Okanagan Estate Wine Cellar in the departure area before your flight – wine makes a great gift!
Mick and Pam Luckhurst, proprietors of Road 13 Vineyards, receive the award from the Lieutenant Governor and his wife.
