A FRESH FORMAT FOR FANS AT THE 2013 WORLD FINANCIAL GROUP CONTINENTAL CUP

T

he ninth edition of the World Financial Group Continental Cup of

Curling is set to take to the ice at Penticton’s South Okanagan Events Centre January 10-13, 2013.

With the challenge series between Team North America and Team World knotted at four titles apiece, the best players in the world will compete under a revised scoring formula that enhances the drama for curling fans.

The inaugural Continental Cup was hosted by Regina in 2002 with Team North America competing against Team Europe in a format designed to invoke the passion of golf’s legendary Ryder Cup.

At the time it was an unconventional concept accompanied by no shortage of doubters among curling’s traditionalists. But when the first year of competition

played out to a storybook finish, fans around the world began to take notice.

In the final end of the final match – a skins showdown between Kevin Martin and Sweden’s Peja Lindholm – the Canadians brought the crowd to their feet with a steal to secure the historic victory for the North American side.

One of the premiere events in championship curling, the World Financial Group Continental Cup will feature three men’s and three women’s teams for each side competing in four disciplines with 60 points up for grabs. The athletes will play Mixed Doubles (six points), Singles (six points), Team Competitions (18 points) and Skins (30 points).

For the first time in Cup history, fans will see a round robin format for the Team Competitions. The three men’s and women’s teams for both sides will

play eight-end games with an equal point value for each match.

The biggest names in the game will take to the ice at the South Okanagan Events Centre for the international classic. Team North America will include Canada’s Kevin Martin, Glenn Howard, Heather Nedohin and Jennifer Jones along with Heath McCormick and Allison Pottinger of the United States.

The Team World roster features Scotland’s Tom Brewster and Eve Muirhead, Niklas Edin and Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden as well as Thomas Ulsrud representing Norway and Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott.
