Association d’Ultimate de Montréal (AUM) begin new project

BY AMANDA FORTIER The Association d’Ultimate de

Montréal (AUM) began a new project this year with the formation of a Women’s Committee. One of the goals of the committee is to promote the role of women within the league. In the very first meeting of the committee, a dozen female Ultimate players sat down to discuss the

barriers to getting women interested in playing Ultimate, as well as how to keeping female players in the game once they start playing. One of the barriers to getting women

into the game that the committee identified was the simple fact that most of the introductory clinics and sessions offered by the league are offered as coed events. The committee agreed that it can be intimidating for inexperienced women to attend these clinics, and that it would be interesting to offer a pre- season Ultimate clinic that would be open to women only. The project was named “Elle Flick”, and was scheduled for May 10, 2012. The committee applied for, and was awarded, an Ultimate Canada Innovation grant to support this project. The support from Ultimate Canada allowed for the rental of a turf field with lights that was used to hold the clinic. The committee recruited a number

of female competitive players from both mixed and women’s teams to attend the clinic and assist Christiane Marceau in leading the activities. In all, nearly 50 women participated in the clinic, which focused on practical skills such as throwing, catching, pivoting, offense and defence.

The evening began with introductions and moved quickly into a throwing clinic. Christiane went over the mechanics of throws, and then the competitive players helped the attendees work on their throws. Then, the women moved into a 3-man that allowed them to improve throwing against a mark. Finally, the participants worked on catching while running. At the end of the session, a short question-and-answer period was held to give the women a chance to ask about playing in the league, competitive Ultimate or anything else they were wondering about. The evening was a great success, and

gave many female players the chance to work on their game. As a result of the success of this event, the AUM also held a rules clinic under the banner of Elle Flick, for women only. Further events are under discussion in order to offer more women the opportunity to discover the sport we all love playing so much!
