In 2012 Watford Mencap was shortlisted for the Herts Care Providers Association’s awards in the ‘Best Business Over 50 Employees’ category.


To support our nomination, local people wrote in to say how much they appreciated what we do. Here are some of the things they said.


My daughter Amanda was unhappy at the place


that she was living in. Ruth at Watford Mencap helped Amanda to write her self-directed support plan; this led to Amanda deciding that she wanted to move and where she wanted to live.


This gave Amanda a feeling of being in charge, rather than having things done to her, as has happened in the past. Watford Mencap has helped me by being there to listen and support. Their Learning and


Leisure activities have been a lifeline for Amanda, a place to meet friends and to get much-needed exercise in a fun environment. Without you all at Watford Mencap, Amanda’s future would look bleak!


Amanda said about her plan:


‘Ruth understood what I was saying; this made me feel better, like someone was helping me. Ruth explained to me what would happen next and how I could work towards my dream of living in a house with my friends and boyfriend. Learning and Leisure is exciting and a place to meet my friends. I like dancing, gym and yoga.’
