Laurence’s Story
Laurence Knight volunteered at Watford Mencap after graduating, while looking for a permanent job. A keen sportsman, he organised the Pancake Race and Watford Mencap’s input into the Watford 10k run. He contacted local authorities, liaised with local businesses and schools, promoted the events and coordinated volunteers. He now has a job with a local school, and plans to join the Metropolitan Police.
Laurence says: ‘I really enjoyed being part of such a variety of activities: meetings, PR, publicity and advertising, meeting special guests, finances as well as being physically involved with setting up events. Volunteering is extremely rewarding and not at all hard work – assuming you enjoy it! Even a few hours a week can make an enormous and measurable difference to the people that Watford Mencap support.’
