Watford Mencap has residential homes for peoplewith a learning disability in Chorleywood, Rickmansworth and Oxhey providing 24-hour support. Everyone has their own room; some rooms are adapted for peoplewith greatermobility needs.
Thorpedale in Chorleywood
is home to 7 people. Residents volunteer,make jewellery, go to church and out for lunch. We are near Chorleywood Underground station.
Berrywood in Rickmansworth is home to 5 people. Residents can grow things or play games in the large garden. They volunteerwith charities, go to WilliamPenn Leisure Centre and to the pub.
Hillside in Oxhey
is home to 8 people. Residents look after Pablo the rabbit, go trampolining and to the Day Centre. They are learning to travel independently, cookmeals and go swimming.

Caroline West has lived in Chorleywood all her life. She moved into Thorpedale when her Dad became too frail to support her. She told staff her dreams were to go to college and work with animals. At college she is now learning art, computers and life skills. The highlight of her week is volunteering at the Dogs Trust, Harefield. Caroline says: ‘It’s my dog job. It’s lovely because you can walk with them and play with them. I chuck balls for them and they bring them back.’ Support worker Teresa Redding adds: ‘Caroline is so happy when she is walking the dogs. It is therapeutic, gives her regular exercise and is a dream come true.’
