FEATURE: THE CYGNUS PROJECT

capitalise fully on this national asset. The go-ahead for the Cygnus field is terrific news, and will contribute substantially to the UK’s gas needs and support thousands of high skilled jobs.’

Faith in the Field

In 1989, Marathon Oil drilled the original discovery well, but then it looked small, with a poor reservoir and no local infrastructure. After acquiring the license in 2002, GDF SUEZ E&P UK as the new operator applied its experience to drill five successful appraisal wells from 2006 onwards.

Jean-Claude Perdigues, Managing Director at GDF SUEZ E&P UK explained to Oil&GasCONNECT how their knowledge and expertise unearthed the field’s true value; ‘From the start we believed that Cygnus had great potential. We applied our technical expertise and determination to identify the opportunity in a discovery which had been relinquished by its previous owners. We took a long term view and used knowledge gained from other GDF SUEZ projects in the Netherlands to understand this particular subsurface challenge. By using the latest 3D technology and innovative drilling techniques we’ve been able to realise the potential of one of the most exciting and largest Southern Gas Basin discoveries in the last 25 years. We are proving there is great opportunity in mature areas and are helping to extend the life of the North Sea, thus contributing significantly to the security of supply and trade balance, while investing and creating jobs throughout the supply chain.’

Production is expected to start late 2015 on what is certainly being described as one of the most exciting discoveries in the Southern Gas Basin in a quarter of a century, putting the spotlight on the North Sea as a valuable and prosperous place of investment for years to come.
