Oil&GasCONNECT

Welcome to the November edition of Oil&GasCONNECT, a quarterly publication available online at www.oilandgasconnect.co.uk and in print format. We hope all of our readers are finding this publication a useful industry communication tool to bridge the gap between buyers and suppliers in the oil and gas industry.

In this edition, Penny Hitchin, our regular feature writer for Oil&GasCONNECT, ventures to the Granite City of Aberdeen, on pages 4-6, to speak to just a few of the hundreds of companies which form the backbone of an adaptable and flourishing supply chain, serving the oil and gas industry both at home and abroad. Following this on pages 22-23, Penny gets an insight into the working life of ROV pilot, Jamie Norman, who describes the skills needed for a career which enables him to pick and choose contracts working across the world. On pages 24-25, we look at the UK’s second largest oil terminal, found on a small Orkney island called Flotta, as we discover the history of the sheltered water of Scapa Flow. Finally, on pages 26-27, Penny looks at the vast range of specialist vessels employed by the North Sea offshore industry and the vast, significant roles they have to play.

We also have, as we like to include in every edition, regular articles covering Training, Law, Recruitment, Health & Safety, Environment, Technology and Q&A’s, which in this edition are answered by Gary Patterson, UK & Ireland Country Manager at Aveva, to keep you abreast of issues within the industry. As additional extras this quarter, EEEGR tell us about their Supply Chain Roadshow, on pages 32-33, which aims to ensure that small to medium sized businesses are actively involved in grabbing a slice of the opportunities and wealth to be generated in the energy industry. On pages 36-37, we hear how Survivex are giving young students an insight into industry survival skills in order to potentially attract future new recruits, and on pages 52-53, Managing Director of OPITO, Larraine Boorman, discusses how workforce competency and the need to secure skills for the future are inextricably linked. Oil&GasCONNECT also takes a closer look at the £1.4 billion Cygnus Project which is showing that there is more to be discovered in mature areas of the North Sea, on pages 29-31.

Do make use of our convenient and up to date directory covering a range of companies and breadth of products and services available to the oil and gas industry, starting from page 57. If your company isn’t currently listed, please refer to our inclusion form on pages 111-112 or alternatively e-mail andrew.tepielow@theconnectseries.co.uk.

Oil&GasCONNECT is about your industry so we welcome your editorial contributions. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have any comments or suggestions as we are always interested to hear your views.
