BP ADOPTS NEW TOPSIDE SAND MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY FROM CAPE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Cape Environmental Offshore Services is pleased to report that it has successfully deployed its Syphonvac IV system on the BP ETAP platform; located in the Eastern Trough Area of the North Sea. This marks the first use by BP of this pioneering technology which has been specifically developed to enable the removal of sand from online Production Separator Vessels on offshore production facilities.

Peter Latham, BP Project Engineer commented, “The Cape EOS Syphonvac cleaning system was used to remove sand from the ETAP LP Separator while operating at normal production rates and conditions. This was the first use of the online cleaning system on the platform; the job was carried out safely and the successful sand removal prevented an extension to the TAR for a man-entry vessel clean. This was a significant result for the platform Operations and TAR teams.”

The ETAP accumulates a cubic metre of sand each month within its gas/oil/water separator process whilst fulfilling a crude oil production

of 40,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd). BP had scheduled an offline clean for this year during their shutdown period to remove this sand.

Attaching the Syphonvac system to the LP Separator, Cape Environmental removed almost 3 tonnes of sand throughout the process, with the vessel remaining in full production for the duration of the procedure. Estimates put the time saving at 17 days from this year’s turnaround. Further benefits have been realised, with the oil/water separation improving and a reduction in the amount of sand carrying over through the produced water process. In addition, the Syphonvac system eliminated the need for confined space entry and therefore reduced the overall risk to manpower.

John Trent, Senior Project Manager/Technical Authority for Cape Environmental Offshore Services, Commented: “Our team has worked on this venture with BP for over three years; we feel that the online line sand removal system underpins Cape Environmental’s drive to provide solutions for the oil and gas

industry. Being able to produce a high quality quick turnaround service which reduces the shut down time ultimately saves our clients’ money.”

The new generation Syphonvac IV can now be used on vessels operating at up to 80 Bars pressure.

In addition to their arrangement with BP, Cape Environmental Offshore Services also has applications for their Syphonvac system with leading international operators such as Shell U.K. Limited, Hess Ltd and Nexen Inc.
