t photokina, Canon launched the new full- frame 6D with a new

20.2 megapixel sensor, very slightly lower in resolution than the 5D series but claiming even better low light performance. To this, the lightweight camera body adds the most sensitive AF module ever made, able to focus at -3EV.

For the first time in any EOS model, WiFi and GPS geotagging are included, allowing you to embed EXIF data with loca- tion information and wirelessly transfer them.

The newly-designed 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor has a native ISO range of ISO 100-25,600 (extendable to 50- 102,400). The new 11-point AF system operates in the equiva- lent of moonlight, or one stop less than the previous best AF sensitivity (Sony Alpha 77). The centre cross-type focus point is the only area which offers this sensitivity.

ing offers the usual automatic modes and creative shooting features. HDR mode enables the capture of both highlights and low lights in contrasty lighting conditions. Multiple Exposure allows photographers to combine up to nine separate exposures into a single image in-camera. A silent drive mode is available for candid portraits, concerts, TV and stage work or weddings. A single axis elec- tronic level (a simplified type) helps with horizon alignment. Images can be wirelessly transferred – or printed using a Canon Wi-Fi enabled printer. Movies and images can be viewed on DLNA-enabled HDTVs. The WiFi also enables remote control of the camera from a smartphone, PC or tablet, adjusting shooting settings and focus before remotely trigger- ing the shutter and viewing the captured image. Using the EOS 6D’s integrat- ed GPS, images can be tagged with location data as they are

shot. The GPS logger function can track journeys. Weighing 770g with battery fitted, the EOS 6D is the most compact full-frame EOS DSLR ever manufactured. It has a dust and drip-proof part-magnesium body with a high-resolution 7.7cm (3.0”) Clear View LCD screen, improved to allowing viewing at extreme angles as this is fixed to the camera back. A new Battery Grip BG-E13 provides additional power for extended shooting, while also making it easy to shoot both vertically and horizontally. When used with two LP-E6 batteries,

Sony Alpha 99 – EVF full-framer with a premium price-tag

WITH NIKON’s D600 an- nounced before photokina (see our report from the London launch, overleaf) and the Canon 6D appearing at the show, the relatively high price of the Sony Alpha 99 puts it slightly out of the running in the new full frame revolution. It has a 24 x 36mm 24 megapixel sensor very like the D600, but with added Phase Detection Auto Focus on-sensor. This enables it, with specific lenses, to track focus during video with much better accuracy than the existing translucent-mirror PDAF can do. This is the first full frame DSLR with a pellicle type mirror

eliminating moving parts, and a shutter capable of silent elec- tronic first curtain operation. It is extremely quiet but lacks the very high speed capture of the APS-C model, Alpha 77, which is closely resembles. It has WiFi and GPS, highly specified HD 1080/60p (maximum) video, twin card slots, an optional 3-battery (total) grip, a special smooth fingerwheel control- ler to enable functions during video takes, and a new type of standard hot shoe. The body- only price of £2499 places it in competition with the Nikon D800 36 megapixel twins, but uniquely capable for video work.

the battery grip offers double the number of shots, and it can also be used with AA batteries. The 6D has full 1080p HD video. Still capture includes 14- bit RAW and a maximum frame of a 4.5fps. In-camera lens ab- beration correction is included, along with AF micro adjustment at two ends of the zoom range when used with zooms. The EOS 6D body is coming into to retail price lists at £1,799 including VAT, and will also be sold with the 24-105mm f/4 L IS lens. Stocks are expected to reach dealers in December.
