I

t’s a difficult question to answer when people ask, what inspires you? I shoot from the heart – especially this series – but I will admit this is very different from my expected style. But then, I’ve never had my heart broken before like this. When we were first discuss- ing my panel, my mentor Henk Van Kooten passed a comment: “I would love to see what would happen to your work if you didn’t dress everything up in fairy-tales”.

It would be very in your face, I thought, yet continued to plan and shoot my original concept. But that’s another story… I had spent a whole two months selecting models, themes, styling and locations for my original idea, all planned down to the finest details with my make-up artist, ready to start shooting in the March. We decided to have a pre- shoot late in 2011 to see how we worked together. Armed with an idea that flashed into my mind so quickly I almost missed it, we set about being creative in the studio. I painted the wall. We had a

play day. I loved the result. And I had to tell Iain Burton-Legge, make-up artist, to scrap my original plan.

Change of heart

My fingers spoke on behalf of my heart. I typed and I cried and I carried on typing and crying, and there it was. The concept for my new fine art photo series, “Love Hurts”. Released.

I painted the back wall first, I wanted a certain look. Every image to be in the same set- ting, give or take a foot or two. This itself is to represent the relationship, confining the heart to the subject, and the emotion. This is all that matters. I then wondered if I could paint my models in the same paint effect- “well no YOU can’t, but I can” said Iain. So he set about producing a body
