t's hard to believe that a year has passed already since I took up the Presidential reins. Maybe time goes faster with age, or possibly it's because it's been such a hectic twelve months! Whatever the reason, it’s been thoroughly enjoyable. I’ve been all over the country and met hundreds of members, and aspiring members, who all have a common aim – they want to be better photographers.

I know that as professionals we have to ‘work’ at our craft so that it actually earns money for us, and sometimes it’s easy to forget about creativity and fall into the ‘flash for cash’ trap. But the really successful MPA members – the ones who still enjoy what they do everyday – have a tangible passion for photography and self improvement. You can see it in their eyes when they talk to you! They are the ones who get off their backsides and go along to meetings and seminars; they try new techniques; they stay one step ahead of fashion, and they are not afraid of failure. They are the members who submit panels for qualifications, and then bounce back when they fail at their first attempt. Their eyes, and minds, are open to learning and they soak up information like sponges.

MASTER PHOTOGRAPHY 4

These are the people that the MPA can work with, nurturing their talent so that they become ambassadors for our Association. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every member was like this? Just think how inspiring regional meetings could be! One such member, and a great friend of mine, is Hoss Mahdavi. His passion for photography, and life in general, is legendary. I first met Hoss many years ago as we both attended the same seminars in our quest for photographic knowledge. Since then we have both developed and matured photographically within the MPA, and now regularly work together as judges for qualifications. At a recent judging session Hoss turned up with an old Olympus film camera that he’d just bought, and spent every spare minute snapping away at his fellow judges. He has true passion for his craft. So, when I hand over the presidential role to Hoss at the awards dinner this month, I know that I’m leaving it in safe hands. His en- thusiasm for all things photographic never wavers, and I know that he will throw himself into the job wholeheartedly. If he has half as much fun as I’ve had he will have a wonderful time! And speaking of having a wonderful time, have you booked your tickets for the annual awards in Newcastle on the 14th of October? It’s a fantastic evening and you’re bound to be inspired by all the winning images that will be on display. If you haven’t booked the date in your diary it’s not too late. Call head office now to order your tickets.

I’d like to finish by saying thank you to all the friendly photog- raphers that I’ve met and chatted with. If I critiqued or judged your work I hope it was beneficial and not too harsh! And also a big thank you to everyone at head office. Working alongside Colin and Linda and their team in Darlington I’ve experi- enced first hand the amount of hassle they have to deal with on a daily basis. Unfortunately head office is sometimes an easy target for members when something goes wrong, even when it’s not their fault.

Members tend to get in touch whenever there’s a problem rather than calling to discuss proactive ideas for the future. Head office does listen, and does act on suggestions where appropriate, so please feed your ideas and knowledge through your regional NEC representative and together we can all help the MPA to create a better future for photographers. – Paul Cooper FMPA, National President
