Demonstrating portraiture at the True Colours seminar in Manchester next month, David Stanbury has just achieved his Associateship in Wedding Photography with a pure – in the best sense – monochrome submission.
D
elivering between 250 and 450 images for the client to choose from with each wedding, David Stanbury has refined his workflow to be fast with impeccable quality. His Associateship was gained with a portfolio hard to distinguish from the best traditional black and white darkroom work. Working with Canon EOS digital full-frame bodies and the 31 megapixel Hasselblad H3D, David prefers smaller 8GB CF cards – less risk of an entire shoot being corrupted – and downloads frequently from his cameras to a 17" MacBook Pro running Lightroom, as does the 27" iMac back at his Wigan base. Clients choose from a
slideshow, a web page and a hardback digitally printed proof book.
An example of two different uses of the same location (you can see the door behind the pillars below). David’s panel shows skill in seeing “settings” for shots and using them with impact.
The final designed photo book is normally produced by GraphiStudio but as an option, matted Seldex albums from Colorworld remain popular. The usual add-ons of parent’s books and mini albums, reprints and framed wall art complete the sales process. Wedding only account for around half the business run by David and his wife Jane, under the Classic Photography name. The balance comes from location and studio portraiture, commercial and fashion assignments.
