my view. It is a truly delicious piece of technology. Its weight centres you to your image, and somehow it comes with an inbuilt magic that makes you slow down, think and feel in greater depth than ever before. It demands perfection, and from deep within, you too demand that perfection first and press the shutter second. Of course then there’s the lighting. What is art without light? It’s like life without soul. Elinchrom Quadra is a light- ing kit I have used for a couple of years now. Again I am in love with a piece of technology. Sim- ple, lightweight and easy to use, the Quadra kit somehow seems to have light-shapers that can

change as easily as my mood. My latest is the 44cm beauty dish with a “shower cap” and deflector set. For this collection I also used the Rotalux Softbox Octa 100cm and a Rotalux Rectangular 60 x 80cm. I plan to add a 50 x 30 Strip Soft Box, 100cm Octagonal Deep and 150cm Indirect Octagonal to my studio for even more control. I play – one light or two, above, below, to the side, in front, behind, to the left to the right. Half power, full power, up high, down low… I play because I can. The Quadra kit is easy to use, move and change settings. Then of course the next step is editing. I am no Photoshop whizz but I have my own secret recipe when it comes to my
tones. This is staying my secret – I think everyone should find something unique to them, something that fits with their work and their style.
Print quality was the reason I failed my Fellowship the first time round. I have since spent two years exploring and playing with different paper. Touching it, examining. Have you ever stood back and appreciated what happens to a print when you look at it from different angles? It can be like magic. Paper, I’ve learnt, is like a fine wine, unique in its own right. I chose Epson Hot Press Bright Paper (recommended to me by Henk Van Kooten). It was indeed a great choice and works beautifully with my tones,
uniquely blended for its deftness with colour saturation and high contrast. A choice for both black and white and colour fine art printing, the perfect vintage, I do believe, for this panel. And finally my Mac. It is creative. It is full of surprises. It is simple to use and it has opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. – Clare Louise
