Denmark (with Fuji assistance). To compete with the surge of APS-C mirrorless includ- ing Samsung’s very NEX-alike NX1000, the FourThirds consor- tium announced that Cosina, Schneider, Zeiss, Tokina, Hoya, Kenko and Tamron were all coming on board to make lenses for Micro4/3 mount.
T
he continued development of mirrorless and
compact cameras suitable for professional use marked the 2012 photokina. Olympus intro- duced low-cost Pen Lite models (the viewfinder no match for their OM-D) while Panasonic launched a G3H beefed up to suit most daily work, and better than anything else of the same Micro4/3 size for video shoot- ing.
Sony showed the NEX-6, the camera which many think the NEX-7 should have been – 16 megapixels of low light friendly sensor in a similar, but not metal, body with the same top class electronic viewfinder. The 7’s 24 megapixel sensor has not suited the candid and low-light uses of compact mirrorless cameras.
In a similarly small, beauti- fully made metal body their RX1 has a full 24 x 36mm 24 megapixel sensor with a permanent non-interchangeable Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm ƒ2 lens. This camera feels wonderful but at a few pence short of £3,000 it needs to. It has no viewfinder, just a rear screen, but accept

both opti- cal and elec- tronic accessory finders – adding
further to the highest price-tag in its bracket. Fuji’s X-series was extended with the X-E1 (no optical or EVF finder) and the XF1 (a pocket- able small-sensor model with retro styling) while new lenses were shown for the X-Pro/X-E. Leica announced that the M- series was to lose its number- ing – all future models will just be called the Leica M, and the year of manufacture and serial number will be your clues to the sensor and functions offered. Hasselblad previewed the new H5D, the fifth genera- tion of their digital range, and surprised the world by announc- ing a partnership with Sony to make a €5,000 version of the NEX-7 with an Italian designed body and choice of three lenses. They intend to work with Sony on APS-C and full frame DSLRs. These products may be more for the wealthy enthusiast than the pro photographer. They will be manufactured in Sweden, where Hasselblad production is now returning after many years in
Canon, fighting back with their own EOS M mirrorless compact system, also updated their G-series to the new G15, a 12 megapixel model with improved video and lens/finder positioning. Nikon updated their equivalent to be the Coolpix 7700, but this lacks a view- finder, which remains important as a feature for the G-series and Fuji’s X10 and X100 models. Sigma’s compacts, the DP1 and DP2 Merrill models with sensors able to match the equivalent of over 30 megapixels in detail, can accept accessory optical finders. The superb quality of the 19mm and 30mm ƒ2.8 lens matched to the Foveon sensor is getting these a cult landscape following as well as military and forensic orders. Sigma announced an entire new lens range, with a new finish and chips which can be programmed using the neat
