Costain, one of the UK’s leading engineering solutions providers announced another strong performance in its interim report with a 16% increase in underlying operating profit, revenue up 2% to £477.9 million and a forward order book of £2.4 billion.

Chairman David Allvey said: “We now meet the integrated service requirements of major customers, whose repeat orders account for over 90% of the order book and who are continuing to invest in essential infrastructure projects. Despite the ongoing challenging economic conditions, we remain on course to deliver a result for the year in line with the board’s expectations.”

The Maidenhead-based group produced the top result for share price rises in August from Thames Valley companies – excluding

the smaller sub-£50m turnover section in which there were several outstanding figures.

Star performance was the 333% rise in AEA Technology, the Harwell- based international energy and environmental company which began a three-year restructuring exercise last November to try and solve its pension scheme deficit problem dating from the group’s privatisation in 1996. It said it was currently trying to identify a new owner.

A statement said: “There has been a lot of inaccurate reporting in the UK press recently, and similar blog/twitter activity, about AEA’s finances and our future. We want to ensure that our customers and stakeholders are informed about the actual position as we undertake our important financial restructuring.”

New MBA programme set to provide dual degrees in Britain and America

Bucks New University, in collaboration with American InterContinental University (AIU) London, has announced the creation of a dual MBA programme.

This will enable students to enrol on a one-year Master of Business Administration programme at AIU London and earn two degrees – a British MBA from Bucks and an American MBA in International Management from AIU London.

The MBA programme follows on from the success of AIU London’s dual UK and US undergraduate business degree programme, launched last year.

Prof Derek Godfrey, deputy vice chancellor of Bucks New University, said: “At Bucks we believe in the benefits of collaboration and its role in helping to create the best opportunities for students at what is an evolving time for higher education. Our continued work with AIU London in validating the new dual MBA programme, enabling students to gain an American MBA from AIU London and a British MBA from Bucks, will not only help to prepare them for professional and creative careers but will also open doors for graduates on a new level.”

AIU London has four key faculties: business, fashion, interior design and visual communication, and offers US and UK bachelor's degrees, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration. Randolf Cooper, AIU London’s campus director and vice president of academic affairs, said: “There has been an increasing emphasis placed on the globalisation of education during the past year. If we are really talking seriously about ‘students at the heart of the system’, then we must acknowledge that the globalisation of education has a great deal to do with how we bring international education opportunities to the UK.

“As globally-aware students in this country look towards ‘value for money’ education propositions, they will soon see that there are advantages in considering the option of attaining a truly international dual MBA without having to leave the UK. The dual MBA offers just such an opportunity.”
