return Cliveden to its iconic best A multi-million pound investment programme designed to restore Cliveden House Hotel to its former glory as the most iconic hotel outside London has now begun


The five-star award-winning hotel was bought earlier this year by property investors the Livingstone Brothers, making it a sister property to their world-renowned Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa in Hampshire. Cliveden’s former owners, the Von Essen Group, went into administration in 2011.


“This is a new chapter for Cliveden, it’s about looking forward and putting this wonderful country house hotel back where it belongs,” says Chris Ward, commercial director for both properties.


“Cliveden has always been a very special place, a house rather than a hotel. We want to make sure the warmth of its welcome is matched by providing the best quality service and the best facilities that guests can expect anywhere outside London.”


Working alongside Ward and general manager Sue Williams are some new management team members who bring years of top-level hospitality experience to complement the familiar faces at the house.


After an initial six months “getting to know Cliveden’s personality”, managing director Andrew Stembridge and Ward have begun mapping out a hotel-wide three-year restoration programme, stressing that work will be completed sensitively section by section and Cliveden will remain open for business at all times.


One of the new team’s top priorities is to re-engage with the regional business community and work has already begun on upgrading the meeting rooms. Due to finish by Christmas, the programme includes introducing state-of-the-art IT and wi-fi facilities, matching those found in any top level boardroom.


Spearheading the campaign to reach out to local businesses is new business development manager Alison Rutherford.


“The Thames Valley has a fantastic business community and we want Cliveden to return to the heart of it, so we’ll be pulling out all the stops to re-engage with the corporate


market. We want to make sure people know we are not only open for business, but we are getting better all the time,” she said.


Ward acknowledges that thanks to Cliveden’s Grade One listed building status this is no ordinary restoration programme, requiring extensive consultation with the National Trust and English Heritage as well as other experts.


“There are strict limitations on what we can and can’t do, but the Livingstones are committed to maintaining, developing and enhancing Cliveden for the future. Everything will be driven by quality,” he said.


“We want to make Cliveden more personal, attractive, aspirational and accessible and to introduce Chewton Glen’s own special blend of intuitive service and warmth of hospitality to Cliveden. Come and see the journey we’re on.”
