This last month has been all about China for meetme. First, we organised the Chinese Visitor Summit in association with i2i Group – a week- long intensive induction to the UAE for 76 leading Chinese tourism buyers in Abu Dhabi and then in Dubai. This was followed by CIBTM in Beijing and a short trip to Shanghai. The Chinese Visitor Summit welcomed Pro-
fessor Dai Bin from the Chinese Tourism Academy who shone light on the potential for the UAE to attract Chinese visitors in greater numbers. Prior to the trip he had extrapolated figures for the first seven months of 2012 and revealed numbers that would usually only be divulged at the end of the year. We were pleased to learn the excellent results and we share them with you on page 38.
CIBTM registered fantastic growth and feedback from the show floor was
resoundingly positive. It was also reinforced by the IBTM research for China that indicated growth will continue unabated. Economic numbers may be a concern at the time of going to press, but leading tourism figures, organisations and associations are confident that the gathering wave will continue into the foreseeable future. manage to get my brain around the statistics. Beijing receives 200 million domestic visitors every year and in 2011, it hosted 286,000 meetings. Yet I still managed to meet a lady sitting next to me on the bullet train to Shanghai who is setting up a bank branch in Dubai in a few months. That conversation took place at 310 kilometres per hour – another incredible number.
