LONDON

VisitEngland, part of the English Tourist Board, has launched a three-year marketing campaign, supported by a GBP19.8 million (US$31.4 million) grant from the Regional Growth Fund. The campaign seeks to boost local tourism and increase the value of international conferences, events and conventions held in the UK. The project will develop business tourism by promoting local goods and services to international

conference and exhibitions buyers. The programme is ultimately expected to generate GBP365 million (US$579 million) in additional visitor spend and stimulate employment growth in the tourism sector by 9,100 over the next three years. VisitEngland will coordinate the project nationally, working with local partners to design and deliver specifi c activities. The meetings and events industry is a particularly important revenue-generating segment for the

UK, contributing almost GBP25 billion (US$39.5 billion) to the economy and employing over 530,000 people. The sector also helps boost infrastructure development in the country. VisitEngland estimates the economic benefi t of meetings and events from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games alone to be around GBP1.8 billion (US$2.8 billion) and will help to further position England as a destination for major international events. Additional benefits can be seen socially, according to VisitEngland, as meetings and events contribute significantly to health and wellbeing, education, social diversity, community spirit and civic pride.

LAS VEGAS

Following its successful launch last year, IMEX America 2012 is poised for further growth with over 2,000 buyers expected to attend the trade show from October 9 to 11 at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. IMEX Group Chairman Ray Bloom said much of

this year’s growth had been achieved through IMEX America partners and intermediaries who want to bring in larger hosted buyer groups, following positive feedback from their clients in 2011. “It was clear that last year’s show produced the

business results both exhibitors and buyers were looking for. It is gratifying to see that feedback is now being converted into increased participation on both sides, which bodes well for an even stronger IMEX America this October,” he added. Of contracts received up to July, more than 20

percent of those who exhibited at the fi rst show are returning with even bigger booths. Likewise, around 50 percent of exhibitors have more than doubled the space they will be taking at the show. IMEX America is an international exhibition for

incentive travel, meetings and events and is already the largest trade show for the industry in the US.
