As the summer holidays draw to an end and families across the West Country get back into some sort of routine, we’re blessed with the abundance of late summer fruits and vegetables that many of us will be harvesting, preserving, pickling and bottling ready to be stored at the back of the cupboard for a rainy day or maybe even for a homemade gift. This month, Katy Hofstede-Smith gives us some great recipe ideas for Victoria plums (page 24), we try some lovely preserve and chutney recipes (from page 38) and hear from the real life ‘Tom and Barbara’ about their ‘Good Life’ chutney season. Clare Hargreaves explores some of the best West Country cheeses and why British cheese making has become popular enough to rival the French cheese industry. If you like a good cheese board then we have selected some for you to try and suggested some great West Country ales to accompany them, a great tasting idea for a lazy Saturday afternoon with friends.
