60/ AUGUST 2012 THE RIDER HEAT, HAY AND BORDERS By Teri Davidson.

Finally had a day of rain and it was about time. Our pastures are bare, hors- es suffering in the heat and we were starting to worry that the next thing would be our well going dry. What a horrible summer for live- stock and farmers! Our weanlings have dropped weight this year more so

than any other because of being away from mom, too hot to eat, and low pasture. We started to get email messages from friends and acquaintances ask- ing if we had any hay for sale or where they could find a supplier. We secured our own supply for next winter but at a 30 % premium.

Our well thankfully has held up and with 28 horses being watered thats a blessing. Even the dogs have suffered with our old- est female King Shepherd dropping way down in weight. We are slowly try- ing to get her to indulge in more eating and hope she

recovers soon.

`Our home is air con- ditioned but still the heat was too much for them . Maggie stresses when things are different, she’s very intelligent and our tak- ing a trip away for a week didn’t help things. My hus- band and I always go down to Florida for the July 4th celebration every year and this year was no exception. The scary thing is ...it was cooler in St. Pete’s Beach than it was here in Ancast- er. And they had RAIN!! lots of it. Every afternoon for an hour and a half or so a big downpour. We kept calling back to the farm to see if we had any here but...nothing.

The search continues for hay for the winter for most of us and we are hoping to cut a decent second cut off our front field. With the costs going up so much we are considering a raise in our boarding costs just until next spring to help cover our increased costs. We have a terrific group in now and things are very happy and well organized. Our initial venture into having borders was a nightmare and soured us for the three months after we got them out. I didn’t advertise and the ones who came up the drive and or called were turned away. Then just on a whim I though I’d place a Kijiji ad and see if we had any calls from people who we felt comfortable with. We had ignored our gut feelings the first time and sure didn’t want to experience anything like the first two previous clients. I guess it is like having tenants come to rent an income property of apartment you own. If you find them to be overbearing and rude and especially if they have lots of sto- ries of how bad it was the last place they rent- ed..don’t let them into your place. There’s a

reason they found so many other places not up to their expectations and it is usually a strong indication of how they are the problem not the pre- vious landlord.

Any way, ran the ad, had so many people call I was overwhelmed. We asked the right questions this time, went with our gut feelings..if it didn’t feel right and if it wasn’t a god fit we turned them away. However we had so many calls that we had our capacity in two days. Unfortunately a good friend called asking if we could take her horses in as her situation had changed and we couldn’t even accommodate her .

It has worked out beautifully and we are really pleased with the lovely owners and their wonderful horses who are currently with us. Everyone works together to keep things running smoothly and our 18 year old daughter and her friend who ride together and are both off to uni- versity this year, ran the farm for us while we went away for our week. The only problem had was with our miniature donkey..Alfie.

Alfie has become very attached to my husband and was sure missing him. He is so funny to watch as he tears around braying. His back end

can’t catch up with his front so he runs in a wide circle , tail up, dust fly- ing and ears pinned back as he races around looking for my husband. He was quite put out about our week away.

Here’s hoping that more rain is in the forecast as the little we had hasn’t improved things much. Perspective is funny. I have a good friend who has a boat and a cot- tage at the lake and her perspective is quite different from mine about this summers weather. She couldn’t be happier, sunshine, boating and swim- ming everyday, the lake to cool off in. While I’m thinking this has been a dreadful summer she’s delighted in what she calls the best summer EVER!!
